The Americans Season 4

WOW:

Alice made a tape? Spells the end for them… watch out on your trip.

Paige will go along with the hit: this will really turn her.

Poor Young Hee’s husband. All the guilt of adultery and none of the fun.

It would be dreadful if Tim and Alice picked up something fatal like malaria on their African travels.

Seducing someone without actually seducing them…David Copperfield would have been proud.

And they managed (mostly) to hide the fact she was preggers!

Why do you think a near full term pregnant woman would be traveling to Africa? Alice isn’t going.

Did I miss that part?

Hope this helps:

I guess the interesting thing about Ethiopia in 1983-84 was the drought and famine - in time it led to the whole Band Aid relief effort but it killed hundreds of thousands before then.

Plus the small fact it fell under Communist sphere of influence, so an interesting choice by the showrunners.

This is a brilliant. I remember the effect of the first BBC news report - it was on the nightly news. People couldn’t believe it the next day, the collective response was immediate:

At least this time Elizabeth feels bad about it. Now the big question is the blackmail going to work out as plan? Imagine Elizabeth reaction if he responds by say committing suicide or confessing to Young Hee. She would’ve wasted months of work, and screwed over someone she was actually starting to like (or at least not be completely indifferent too) for nothing. Also it was nice to see her have to deal with a problem that’s completely unrelated to espionage.

And I don’t care what kind of drug I’ve been slipped. I’m not going to wake up thinking I’ve had sex when my body is telling me otherwise.

That’s why E rubbed the lotion on his Young Hee.

I was wondering that as well. If he doesn’t tell his wife, then Elizabeth would get to keep being her friend. How better to keep an eye on things. So is the plan to blackmail the couple to keep the shame away from the family? When she uses the blackmail to get access to the secret room, they will know that they were set up from the beginning. They can claim that it was all a lie. Where is her proof? And why did she try to seduce him when he was going to pass out anyway? The whole thing was weak.

Oh yeah and showing The Day After was a nice touch. I remember when it aired and it was a huge deal. I was a college sophomore and lived in the dorms so I didn’t have a tv so I missed it.

Photos will be shown to Hee. As a man of high honor, he’ll go along so as not to suffer shame.

It’s not weak: E went after him based on the weakness she found: the porn. She’ll use that too, no doubt, and threaten to tell his wife about the hidden stash. The wife has probably stumbled across the stash; hence, she’ll believe he had sex with E.

But it wasn’t a weakness. He turned down her advance before he passed out. (And again, why even make the advance?) His weakness was being kind and trying to help.

But he woke up in the bed… with lotion on his…

It’s not a big leap to believe alcohol on an empty stomach can lead to a dazed condition where one might not remember every detail.

He’ll focus on the shame and his potential divorce, and do as E requests.

On the lotion:

We need to remember: the KGB likely developed this lotion… perhaps designed as faux semen… so as to fool a tool.

This would be all the Hee man would need to believe he had sex with E.

Sometimes lotion is just lotion.

Ancient Chinese saying:

A wise man listens to his Hee!

One nice little touch I liked - while Elizabeth was rifling through Don and Young-hee’s shelves, she pulls out a VHS of the film “Sophie’s Choice” - alluding to the fact that no matter which way she decided to go with them, she would end up hating herself. That was a nice use of a nostalgic reference.

And “the Day After”! Oh man, watching that movie just stands out in my mind like a mushroom cloud. I remember my whole family watched it - just like the Jennings did - and I remember every scene they showed. They showed it on a Sunday evening and it was all anybody talked about at school the next day. My social studies teacher AND my science teacher took time out of their regular lesson plans to talk about it.
It seems like the show is wrapping up a lot of storylines rather decisively this season - Nine, Martha, Lisa, now even Young-hee who they barely just introduced. Certainly the situation with Pastor Tim will finally come to a boil - whatever he wants to discuss after he and his wife get back from Ethiopia cannot be good. I have a suspicion that there will be a major game-changing event before this season is over.

BTW, This Tatiana lady has got to be up to SOMETHING with Oleg. I just can’t believe she’s simply a new love interest for him. She just radiates femme fatale energy and she has something up her sleeves. I imagine the Rezidentura may not be so trusting of Oleg, given how close he was to Nina and his general fascination with American culture.
