And sometimes the person most deserving of firing is on the team that won the week’s task.

How does that translate to the real world? If a team or department surpasses its goals, does everyone get the bonus? Even the guy who didn’t contribute?

How about team failure, when one person shone but was dragged down by the others?

Depends on where you work. In a lot of places, yes, if the policy is a bonus for everyone in the department gets a bonus for surpassing x goal, then even the guy who did the bare bones minimum to avoid firing gets a bonus. Because that’s policy. A lot of places do it that way to avoid accusations of favoritism (or unfavoritism).
