The Apprentice -- 4/14

Forget Chris, I wasn’t expecting such a *Kendra *pile-on here! I dunno, if the worst people can say about you is that you occasionally micro-manage and don’t have an overly aggressive leadership style, you might be in pretty good shape.
Kendra was extremely professional later about the way her team bailed on her- their was no childish coldness nor were there any emotional accusations on her part. They won and she simply celebrated with them. (As far as sounding “whiny,” of course she vented to the camera- that’s where you can let it all hang out.) Craig, on the other hand, wouldn’t know how to keep his issues with someone on a professional level if he tried.

Tana definitely disappointed me last night.
(I’m sure she’d be reeling to know that.)

Excellent points all around, G.O.. You’re right; it was foolish of Craig to say that Kendra had no vision, when she clearly emerged with a brochure that Pontiac was quick to jump on. Ditto for Tana, who decided to hide behind her exemption just as John did.

Trump and company have jumped on previous candidates for failing to motivate their teams properly. As you pointed out though, these candidates have very little actual leverage over their teammates. If they steadfastly refuse to do the job, then one might have no choice but to do all the work.

Having said that, I feel that if Kendra’s people skills had been better, she could have rallied her teammates more. Sometimes, a little empathy can go a long way, and I don’t think she empathized with her teammates in their exhaustion. (Kelly Perdew, for all his failings, did demonstrate this principle in the season two finale.)

Definitely. I had no problem figuring out where Kendra wanted to go with the brochure. She outlined it right from the start – key it to “emotions”. She laid it out pretty well, and Craig just wasn’t listening, totally tuned her out.

Anybody know what was up with Tana saying “What’s this in my bed?” What was that?

I think she was lying on the alarm clock.

Anyone understand why Craig and Tana are still sharing a room? Surely, with all the people who have left there is now plenty of room for people to spread out into their own space.

It’s been called before now, but I’m adding my agreement that Kendra didn’t really show any management qualities during this task.

WhyoWhyoWhy has Tana propelled herself to her lofty status? She irked me in episode one, and made my skin crawl in the music-stars charity episode, but even I admit she’s got poeple skills and good ideas. I don’t know if I could work for her though.

What’s scary is we’ll get to see Chris, Angie and Stephanie(?) again during the final task. How do you make it so you can force Chris to the other team? I forget who picks first when divying up teams.

That’s by no means certain.

She’s pleased with herself because she’s been PM twice and her team won both times. I don’t think any of the others have fared so well. This season’s apprentices have been so forgettable, I can’t remember.

It’s a 170hp 4 cylinder that goes from zero to sixty in 7.2 seconds. Uh, yeah…

I agree with pokey; this is definitely a chick car.

I like to think that Trump would have revoked Tana’s exemption and fired her anyway.

That would have been really funny.

Nah, there was the time earlier this season when someone (Brian?) really deserved to have his exemption revoked – and when Danny tried to talk Trump into that, Danny got fired.

Anyone else notice that Trump vastly overstated his personal worth?

But what was Kendra having them do? It looked like they were just sitting in the room watching over her shoulder while she chose pictures. Then they left the room and were doing what? Nothing? I don’t mind staying up if I have something to do, but it seemed like they didn’t. Of course, they didn’t have to bail the way they did.
The more I think on it, the less I liked anyone involved in that thing. They all acted badly in one way or another. I think that in the finale they should announce that the winner is … Kwame.

Yeah, but her stated reason for slacking off was because she was exempt. Completely deserved or not, it would have been really funny to see her face when she was fired anyway. I can totally see Trump doing that, too. Anyway, it would have been her or Craig; Kendra could have been fired for her inability to control her team, but everyone was pissed off at Alex for his 1.5 hour nap. No way would they stand for the level of abandonment displayed by the other two.

I missed the episode in which Danny was fired, so I can’t comment on that.

And I missed the “next week on”; what’s this about some people returning?

Remember last season, Mosaic, and that stupid Crustacean Nation thing? One of the guys started whining in the board room, attributing his non-involvement to the fact that “no one told [him] what to do”. I don’t remember if he was fired then or not, but that excuse didn’t fly then, it probably wouldn’t fly now. Didn’t Craig say something about having a bunch of pictures but no words? He should have offered to write something up.

Even if Kendra declined his offer and found nothing else for him (or Tana) to do and they wound up going to bed anyway, at least they would have been involved. In the event of a loss, this would have shifted more of the blame onto Kendra because it would have been her decision as the PM to let her employees go and finish the task herself. The way they did it not only did they risk being fired (well, Craig anyway), but they made themselves look like complete assholes.

I learned all this when I was 16 and working at a convenience store; the boss can’t bitch at you for standing around when he’s the one that told you there’s nothing to do. Of course, this guy’s motto was “There’s never nothing to do.” so I had to always invent new ways to clean the cigarette shelves on days he happened to feel like being a prick.

On the other hand, I think Kendra is just sneaky enough to have planned it all to go this way anyway; if she doesn’t give them specific tasks to do, they won’t do anything. Loss = she definitely doesn’t get fired. Win = she gets to bask in the glory of having won the task “all by [her]self”.

In that episode, Trump was firmly on the record that he would NOT violate his exemption rule under any circumstance.

Pokey, I really enjoyed your take on everything. Very perceptive. I do think, though, that Kendra’s plan was pretty clear. I remember raising my eyebrows when they were listing all those emotions, and Craig kept asking, “What’s our theme?”

Um… could it be… I don’t know… emotions?

Liberal, yeah. Why didn’t she just answer him? It was like she was purposely keeping him from participating. Shouldn’t have been that hard to explain it, and if Craig doesn’t respond to words, draw him a picture. A  , or a  , or  – that’s how the Solstice makes me feel, Craig. Get it?

The truth is that Kendra working on the pamphlet alone probably is why it turned out so well. One vision, too many cooks and all that. Still, the way Craig and Tana bailed sucked.

Good question, Auntie. I frankly wondered whether she didn’t in fact answer him, and we just didn’t get to see it. The editors seemed pretty intent on driving home the antisocial angle. I just don’t understand why he had to ask the question. His ability to induce is remarkably dull. Plus, I didn’t like the fact that he himself was vindicated for his earlier inability to communicate, and then held what he perceived as the same weakness against Kendra. It’s a bit like being forgiven for a big debt, and then demanding that the guy who owes you a nickle pay up.

See, I got the feeling that she did. Several times. I felt as though I had been told the theme several times, and I was looking at a highly edited version of their day. Craig had actually been there without tape editing, so he surely must have been told the whole concept.

It’s just that Craig seems to have severe communication difficulties. (Remember his PM turn where no one understood anything that he said for hours?) A real problem in understanding or making himself understood. I almost want him to make the final four because it would be so funny to watch him (and the interviewers’ faces) in the interviews when he babbles on about who knows what.

I think Kendra did a great job with this - she managed the design, photography, and production staff well, she put out a quality product. And she didn’t whine to Trump or Pontiac, and not excessively to her teammates (I’m ok with her whining in the personal interviews to the camera…especially since her complaints were dead on.) I also don’t get the Kendra-hate here.
