I’m amazed at peoples’ stubborn naivete in the wake of J6.
The point, as was outlined a long way above, is that the five votes came in on a case that may well have turned, in the minds of at least two of the justices, on a technical point relating to the government paying its bills for work already done. It may be that either of JR or ACB figure it’s just fine for the unitary executive to impound money as long as it gives ample warning that it’s going to do so, so that people counting on that money know not to count on it.
No one pointing out this possibility has called this particular case anything but a win - though I would note that the judicial order still gives the government some ways to drag their heels for as long as possible. And going foward, this means nothing for appropriations already passed by Congress - except that with four justices ready to neuter the legislative power of the purse, the slim majority in this case would need to hold together to preserve that congressional prerogative. Given that this court has already asserted the most sweeping enhancement to presidential power in our nation’s history, things are really hanging by a thread.
Are you so committed to your optimism that you can’t see how quickly this could slide right into autocracy in a hurry?
I have multiple medical condition that untreated will kill me. One, even with access to medical treatment through Medicaid, has nearly killed me 10 times in the last eight years. This Congress has just announced that they intend to gut Medicaid so the richest people on Earth can have some more tax cuts.
Spare me this ‘Yaaaa, we won this one!!!’ until you can guarantee me that there isn’t going to be a time in the next couple of years when I can’t get those meds. Because there’s no one that can give me the thousands of dollars those meds cost a month and without them I go into respiratory arrest.
Thank the gods I’m a diabetic and I have enough insulin in the fridge to choose how I die.
My “pessimism” is entirely based on reality.
Of course I see that. Do you think I’d be this passionate if the stakes weren’t high? That’s exactly why we need to celebrate every victory. I’ll give up hope when I’m dead and not before.
Temporary (and largely ignored) stopgaps are not victories.
Anything that slows Trump down or puts obstacles in his path is a victory.
Unless… “losing” a judgement every once in a while is actually part of the performative chaos that allows Trump to speed up.
He either wins fast or he wins slow? What the fuck kind of message is that? I don’t want to “punish” him with temporary slow-downs. I want his evil ass stopped, and so far you have yet to give us one solid reason not to do so.
That’s because I’m not trying to “give you a reason not to stop him”, dumbass.
Actually a little more panic and a lot less “Nothing to see here-I guess it wasn’t that big a deal” the last time around would have done a world of good.
I’m just as happy as you are to celebrate any and every time Trump steps on a Lego. But in the grand scheme of things, considering the man is trying to destroy my entire country, I am not counting on the Supreme Court of the United States to save me. What power do they have against Trump? They can issue a ruling saying “no, you are not allowed to do that”. Trump may be following these rulings for the moment but he doesn’t need to if he doesn’t want to. All they can do is complain. He can have people killed, including them. And they are the ones who told him it is okay. I’m glad he hasn’t embraced this yet but as time goes on, at some point he’s going to say he had no choice. Remember what he said about how someone who is saving the country cannot break the law. The Supreme Court isn’t going to pierce that with rulings about how he is breaking the law. I encourage them to continue opposing him with any and every ruling they can issue but I don’t see it stopping him any more than the Lego bricks would.
I’m not sure who you think you’re arguing with, but it isn’t me, because I’ve certainly never said “nothing to see here, I guess it wasn’t a big deal”.
You seem to be harboring a delusion that pants-shitting terror and impotent wailing is the only appropriate way of expressing displeasure with the administration and that actually trying to be, you know, productive with your anger is somehow minimizing the problem.
You’ve had four months to get past the “depression” stage of grief. Quit your crying.
Nobody here “crying”, so take your “Stop hitting yourself!” act elsewhere. Somebody pointing out where Trump or his buddies are doing something wrong is NOT the same as someone saying Trump is omnipotent and nothing can be done about it-It is just pointing out a very real problem.
Then stop shitting on the people who are taking Trump to court and winning, and stop acting like celebrating a victory is somehow denying the existence of a problem.
Umm, where did that happen???
Where you repeatedly whined that it doesn’t count because they didn’t win by enough points, for one.
That’s not what I fucking said. Even if it was, it’s still is not “shitting on the people who are taking Trump to court”.
So I guess there will be no quotes of posts shitting on the people who are taking Trump to court.
In his imagination-That same place where everyone is supposedly declaring that Trump is All-Powerful and can’t be stopped.
It absolutely is. You’re minimizing their effort and saying that their victories don’t matter.
Have you considered calling them “possible temporary setbacks”, instead of “victories”, until we see if Trump or his buddies are actually obeying those court orders?
