I’m so impressed with my daughter right now. She drew this yesterday, pointed at it, and announced “Cat!”. She’s 21 months old.
Mundane and pointless? Maybe to everyone but me. but I still had to share.

Wow! That does look like a cat, to me at least. Keep providing her with art supplies, it may be a lifelong interest that can bring her great joy at the least. She’s got some latent talent IMO. Of course, (you know this already) don’t pressure her, let her draw, or not draw as she pleases. She may just do it for fun, or she may take it further, who knows? smiles at the proud papa
I think that’s pretty good for 21 months – hell, I’m 294 months old and, if told to draw a cat’s face, would be hard-pressed to do much better.
Maybe she was going for a circle and just got lucky, but the shape of the face in the picture really does suggest “cat” to me. Get that girl some art supplies.
I see a budding Picasso there. Love the eyes and ears.
That’s the cutest thing I have ever heard/seen. What a fun smart child!
Yeah, she’s a little, um, spirited. Yeah, that’s the word.
I’m impressed with your daughter, too.
She’s clearly ahead of the curve in the drawing department.
Whaddya talking about…that doesn’t look like Cat Stevens to me!
j/k
Pat her on the head and tell her “Great drawing!” for me.
Kudos! Obviously the child has already learned to recognize the more intelligent life forms.
I love the look of 'kitty incredulity" in the picture. In fact, I am getting ‘that’ look from across the room right now (as in, “I cannot believe the food bowl is only half-full right now, don’t you ever feed me?!?..”).
According to my big chart of What Kids Should be Drawing and When, your daughter is advanced. I have some art supply catalogs I can loan you. You want to focus that spirit!
[sup]kids involved in the arts score an average of thirty points higher on the SATs, plus a whole bunch of other good stuff[/sup]
Thanks. We have a great art supply place in town here, and this weekend we are going to set up a little table for her stuff. A big roll of paper permanently on the table.
As I write, she is spinning wildly in front of me until she gets too dizzy to remain upright. Then she falls, crawls around a bit, then does it again. Kook!
Oooooh, and when she stops, put a crayon in her hand and see what she draws!
If I didn’t know better, I’d swear you were my ex talking about our daughter (except she’s a little older.) She has what I consider really advanced drawing skills for her age, and she used to do the same spinnign thing.
She also used to do this weird thing where she’d sidle up to a door and kinda bump up against it, all while smiling maniacally.
She’s insane.
Or, have her draw while spinning, and you’ve got yourself a human Spirograph!
heh heh, kids are cool.
Are you sure you don’t want some of these catalogs? I’ve only got eleventy million of them and it would be no problem to send them your way. You could use them as cushioning for when she’s had enough spinning. Or when it’s had enough of her, as it usually goes.
Well, if you think it’ll have some good products that’ll help encourage her, then send one my way. I’ll email you my address. Thanks Ashes.
Oops, your email bounced back. You can e-mail me if you want.
Rockin’! I made a plasticene cube the other day, Little Case {three next April}picked it up, played with it for a while, and handed it back: “It’s a face.” Damn me if it wasn’t - pressed in with his thumbnail were two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and - what’s this line under the mouth? “A beard.” Yes, Daddy has a beard. I was so absurdly proud.
