I didn’t find any other threads for this movie, so I thought I’d ask the question. The movie concerns a bank robbery in London in 1971. The robbers got away with the money, and there was no follow up or convictions obtained. The plot twist was:
Several photographs depicting a graphic sex scene featuring Princess Margaret were taken and held in a safe deposit box in a bank in London. A radical black power activist was threatening to publish said photos unless he was allowed to go free from some criminal charges. The government desperately wanted those photos back but couldn’t be connected to them. An operative was tasked with orchestrating a bank robbery that would get the pictures back and point the finger at the bank robbers. The media was prevented from going after the story and it died within days.
At the end of the movie, before the credits ran, there was a statement that the story was mostly true, that minor details were added. My question is, could this scenario happen today? If one of the royals was caught in the act of coitus, or being in league with known criminals, could the British Government keep a lid on the media from running with the story? Or in this internet age, would said royal be shown on a Girls Gone Wild DVD within the week?
Just so that you know, the contents of OP spoiler boxes are visible on preview. It’s good practice to plunk a few spaces if you have spoilers early in the OP.
Like most such statements in movies, there’s a pretty wide latitude for truth. The only thing that we know happened for real was that robbers did indeed tunnel into the vault at Lloyd’s Bank and pilfer the deposit boxes. A ham-radio nerd really did hear their walkie-talkie conversations. We also know that the UK government issued a “D-notice” asking the press to stop reporting on the robbery for national security reasons, and they did. That’s it.
There have been rumors about the Princess Margaret photos since almost the beginning, but no proof. There were rumors about MPs in compromising brothel photos, but again no proof. So all we have to work on is 30 years of speculation and the producers’ unverified claim that someone with inside knowledge helped them with the details of the story.
