The bear chase hypothetical

One time when I was in the Coast Guard, I found myself swapping sea stories with an guy who had been stationed in Alaska. There’s a lot of coast line in AK, so there’s also many navigation beacons and lights (NavAids) along the that coast . They’re automated so they aren’t manned but from time to time they need maintenance and sometimes repairs (I’m not talking about the LORAN stations now). The aids are often in remote areas and one never knows where a Kodiak bear might show up. So when they’ve got to service one of those NavAids, they send an Electronics Technician and a seaman(SN) or fireman(FN) who is available out in a heavy duty 4x4 pickup with a cap loaded up tools and replacement parts they might need. And the crews go out armed in case a Kodiak bear shows up and isn’t impressed by the horn honking. M-1911A1s, M-16s were available and some guys had personal weapons too.

His story was one time he was going out on a repair with a fireman. He took an M-16 with 4 loaded magazines. He figured Kodiaks are big but 60 rounds on full auto should take one down (taking account for misses). The FN just brought a .22 pistol along. The guy told the FN he should bring something more powerful along and the FN told him “I don’t have to shoot any bear. I just have to shoot you in the leg so I can outrun you.”

I think the question is from my brain, though inspired generally by a situation. Does that count?

This would never happen to Goober.
