The best radio station ever, and it's online!

WMNF, in Tampa, Florida. It’s the local public radio station, running out of the University of South Florida. They have a slew of different programs, more mainstream during the day, including NPR, and getting positively bizarre at night. Celtic, hip hop, jazz, bluegrass, R&B, goth, even polka, and on Sunday mornings the Sunday Simcha. The quality online isn’t great, but it is a great place to check out new music, especially the eclectic Eleventh Hour show that comes on weeknights at 11 p.m.

So, got any online stations you like? Give 'em up! Let’s hear about them!

And, as an extra bonus for Mac users, you can download the shareware Audio Hijack. It’s a great little piece of software that, among other things, allows you to record streaming audio as an aiff file. And you can set a timer so that it starts recording when you want, so you can get that crazy show that’s only on at one a.m.

I like their polka, bluegrass, goth, and even the Friday Night Drive. But not that horrible r+b program that comes on before/after it (i dont remember.) 50’s rock n roll I can take but not r+b.

But i never listen to them online, their schedule never meshs with when I want to listen (yeah , read your post, but I’m on dialup with a PC.)

Radio Margaritaville

Not strictly for parrotheads such as myself, either. (Although being a Buffett fan does help because they do play a lot of Jimmy’s music). Radio Margaritaville has exposed me to some music I would never have otherwise gotten into (Little Feat, for starters). Up here in PA we had a harsher-than-not winter this year (although, still not as bad at what I saw in Syracuse) and I can’t tell you how many times I was able to connect and then drift off to Key West for an hour or an afternoon.

Added bonus: When Jimmy goes on tour in the summer, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday night you can hear his concerts live, from wherever he is at the time. Lots of fun, and a little family togetherness - my sister lives in Chicago, and I always make sure to listen when I know she is in the audience, and she does the same when the concert is broadcast from Camden.

Yay! I get to share the only thing I like about southern CA!
www.kcrw.com The best public radio I’ve heard. Great music, and they’ve had excellent war coverage.

Ah gee, lightingtool, you beat me! KCRW membership gets you mucho discounts, too. Woot.

I spend most of my radio time on two local stations. One is KUOW, the larger of the Seattle area NPR stations. It’s a good, solid public radio station.

For music, though, I primarily listen to KEXP. They feature a great variety of music – lots of “alternative,” but also many shows centered around a particular genre: country, rockabilly, house music, world beats, etc. I’m especially fond of Friday evening’s “Shake the Shack.”

I find as I grow older that I have less and less interest in what commercial radio is playing. It doesn’t suck – I’m not that militant in my musical tastes – but it’s kinda bland. And while '80s stations were fun for a while, there are only so many times “Land Down Under” gives me that oh-so-pleasurable rush of nostalgia.

The correct answer, everyone (Thank you, Interrobang!?) is KEXP.

Just so you know, lightingtool, many of the DJs at KCRW get their new music tips from listening to KEXP.

KEXP is one of the reasons I moved from Chicago to Seattle, and now most of my friends back in Chicago listen to it. I’ve also recommended it to members of several email music lists I participate in, and have friends all over the world listening to it now.

I urge all of you who love music, of any and every genre, to listen to KEXP for a while. Skim their website for program details, for genre shows, etc., and then of course donate some cash when they have their pledge drive in June (they hire me to supervise the pledge room, so I’ll be there waiting for your call).

Been there, done that, got thanked on-air by Leon Berman, and got the red Mexican-wrestling t-shirt as a thank-you gift. Also accidentally double-posted in my rush to extol the virtues of KEXP. (They put the X in kuh-exp.)

Another yay for KEXP!! Definitely my favorite on or off-line music station.

Favorite non-music station has to be WHRO, my local NPR. They rule too.

Online or in the car, nothing can beat WFMU

Another good one on-line is RadioCaroline on www.live365.com
Rumor is, its a pirate radio station broadcasting off the coast of England on the boat Caroline, or used to be.

If you like your music in a rich stew of roots, folk, blues, country, classic rock and singer-songwriters, then the legendary KPIG is the station for you. Based in Freedom, California, and successor to the even more legendary KFAT of Gilroy, California, this tasty concoction of cyberpork is just your style.

Unfortunately, their free webcasts are a thing of the past, and one must sign up for the RealPlayer Pass at $5.95 a month to get them pluse 30 other stations. But it is indeed worth it. Here’s the playlist for the last few hours, as grabbed off the station site:

It’s a powerful brew, and the DJs are more like public radio than the plethora of obnoxious ego-trippers found on most for-profit stations. There are loyal listeners all over the world, and a decent website in which you can give feedback on the music, e-mail the jocks, or discuss anything with other fans.

Give it a try - you’ll like it

I like KTRS - “Talk radio for people who thought they would never listen to talk radio.”

I second the vote on KPIG. I always listen to it when I am in the Bay Area.

My favorite is WFUV - the best ‘Americana’, or ‘Alt-Country’ station I have ever heard. For any other antique WFMU fans out there - Vin Scelsa has a weekly show on WFUV. FUV is where I go to hear The Jawhawks, Johnny Cash, Dar Williams, Tony Trishka, Ryan Adams, and Jerry Douglas.

I should have mentioned in my previous post that WFUV is from Fordham University, in NYC. 90.7 FM.

I was a KFAT listener when I lived in the Bay Area, 20 years ago. Loved it. Great radio! Remember FAT Frys?
