The Big Bang Theory, Season 9, Episode 1 (September 21, 2015) -- "The Matrimonial Momentum"

They have completely ruined the Stuart character. The original Stuart was interesting and funny. This Stuart is creepy and not funny.

What a depressing and not funny epi. :frowning:

I hear ya. I think it was the most painful episode of all time.

Seriously, Leonard? Why would you bring that up on your way to your own wedding? And Penny, for heaven’s sake it happened a long time ago and Leonard is marrying YOU today. It shouldn’t even be an issue and since you made it an issue don’t marry the guy. It’s not like there were family and friends there who would be out travel time and money.

I totally thought we’d learn Penny’s last name during the vows. sad face.

Penny’s dress annoyed me. Who cares if it’s a Vegas elopement, give her something fancy. I expected the requisite white strapless cocktail dress. Hell, I wore a white dress with a blingy halter at my own Vegas wedding. But that’s because strapless is totally unflattering on me.

The whole “Sheldon whining after Amy” storyline was just awful. But Sheldon taking Penny a “hot beverage” was just sweet.

This show has gone from “quirky and fun” to “irritating and annoying” real fast, IMO.

I can’t believe how irrationally angry I got during a sitcom episode…

Sheldon has been emotionally abusing Amy since pretty much day one and she finally had enough.

Did not laugh once.

Did not like the plot contrivances.

WAY too much emotional abuse going on with all parties.

And the laugh track was just grating.

I didn’t enjoy this one at all. I hate the fact that the show keeps moving further and further away from nerd humor and into “Friends.” If I wanted to watch sitcoms about a bunch of people having romantic issues, I’d watch one. I watch BBT for the nerd stuff.

Penny and Leonard were annoying (and the heavy hand of the writers keeping them apart was so obvious it was almost another character).

Sheldon and Amy were pathetic.

Stuart was skeevy. Really skeevy.

The only ones who didn’t annoy me were Howard and Bernadette, and Raj (and none of them got to do much).

If this is the way the season’s gonna be, it’s gonna be a long sit.

That new show they’re running after TBBT? I couldn’t make it through the introduction scenes. Looks like it’s supposed to be “Arrested Development” without the humor.

It’s not guitar on MTV, but it will do.

Now that ain’t workin’ that’s the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain’t dumb

I still watch hoping they will increase the budget for new writers that have happy relationships. Did anyone smile in the episode? I can forgive a lot if it looks like the cast is having fun playing their roles, I didn’t see any evidence of that. It’s like the actors are tired of playing such petty people.

According to Mayim, there is no laugh track. It is filmed before a studio audience and even the scenes that take a lot of prep work (Howard and Bernadette as Smurfs) are shown to the audience so they can get the laughs.

The issue I think is that they have to sometimes cut off the laugh track abruptly to keep the show on time, so that’s why it may see fake.

I may be mistaken but, if you’re talking about Kaley Cuoco, I’m pretty sure that she already had the boob job. IIRC, she did an interview last year where she revealed that she had augmentation surgery while she was still starring on 8 Simple Rules. I didn’t get the sense that any of the other women had had any work done, either.

Again, I may be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure that’s happened before, in Season 6, before he was relegated back to guest star status. But hey, maybe it’ll stick this time.

Also, I appear to be going against the grain on the Dope about this show* when it comes to Stuart: to me, creepy Stuart is the funniest I’ve ever seen him. This episode was the first time since the first Wil Wheaton episode where I’ve ever laughed at anything that Stuart has said on this show.

  • (of course, I already knew that, since there seems to be a very vocal contingent here opposed to Leonard and Penny being together, and I am not about that life at all).

Kevin Sussman gets main credits billing on the episodes in which he actually appears.

Some women do that though, and it fits Penny’s character to change her hair around a lot.

I was incredibly disappointed about this wedding. I have a fear that this whole season will be about them deciding to annul this travesty and then planning a real wedding for the final episode. Or Sheldon and Amy plan a real wedding, and Penny and Leonard end up crashing to make it a double.

I wanted this wedding to finally show us Penny’s family and hometown, etc. To see his Mother interact with hers? Its comedy gold! How could they pass that up?!?

The writers have almost aggressively avoided providing background information for the characters (especially Penny). It’s made them feel more and more plastic over time. We’re not looking for Tokien-esque world building here, but the price of continuity convenience is the eventual shrinking of characters to a single dimension. The longer we know them, the more the background/familiarity ratio gets out of whack.

My best laugh:

“Are you going to tell me it’s all in God’s plan?”
“There’s a good chance”
“Then, no thank you.”

When Sheldon was following Amy down the corridor, and again standing outside the window, I was hoping for a secretive smirk on her face, that this is part of her 3-year plan to “get” him, and it’s working like a charm.

Once again, I’m left feeling that the writers are tired of this show, and trying to wean us off of it.

ETA: Was anyone else feeling sorry for Cuoco and Galecki, who used to date seriously, and now had to act out a wedding together?

It wasn’t as bad as some of last season’s episodes, but it certainly could have been better. I am inclined to agree with several posters about Stuart, who frankly used to be a much more interesting character; it’s like now that Howard can’t be creepy due to being married to a gorgeous blonde to whom he’s devoted… we need a new creepy guy.

Raj needs more air time.

I find it disturbing that when one watches reruns, one notices that Sheldon’s manchild tendencies tend to oscillate depending on the needs of the plot.

Well everyone is signed on through next season. Maybe they do need to get new writers with fresh ideas though but we got this and next season for sure.

They broke up in 2009 and both claim it was amicable and that they’ve remained friends since so I’m sure the wedding thing wasn’t a big deal.

it is sad when you spend the episode noticing the differences in the wolowitz home rather than pay attention to the characters.

i found the changes interesting. just a few things here and there, some furniture changes.

i’ve heard things about next week that i’m not sure how the show will “pull it off”.

What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What? What?

I’m voting for “Sheldon gets laid, realizes what he’s been missing all this time, and becomes totally sex obsessed, asking loads of wildly inappropriate questions of his friends in an effort to become as expert in sex as he is in physics.”

But I am used to disappointment.

Well, somewhat true. Most shows filmed before a studio audience has the laugh track “sweetened”. Thus, when there is no real laugh or it sounds forced they will add laughs- which sound worse, to many of us. Since this epi wasnt funny…

I saw what you did there.
