The Big Bang Theory, Season 9, Episode 1 (September 21, 2015) -- "The Matrimonial Momentum"

On this we agree.

A lot of people *would *consider it infidelity. So what’s the proper reaction to infidelity, IYO? Leaving aside whether it was funny – I didn’t think it was either – but I don’t think she over-reacted.

I don’t think she overreacted at all. In fact, she should never have married him under the circumstances. This whole ep was one mistake after another.

I haven’t hated the last few seasons as much as other people, but this episode was soooooooo boring and dumb. Usually premieres are among the season’s best, so this does not bode well for me finishing it out. I always forget when it’s on live because it seems to move around a lot. It’s not on Hulu or on my cable app, so I have to go to CBS’s website directly to watch it. It’s going to feel like a whole lot of effort for nothing if it doesn’t get better fast… and then I just won’t bother if I have to work for it.

Leonard absolutely was a scumbag for what he did. Not only cheating, but keeping it secret. If he had told her close to when it happened, that would have been more fair. Yes, it’s not as bad as like being married for 40 years and finding out your spouse has a second, secret family, but it doesn’t get a gold star. What he did could be forgivable and/or understandable, but it wasn’t GOOD.

I’m a lot like Penny and I was with a guy a lot like Leonard. And he cheated. And it hurt. It hurt a lot. Maybe she should have been better, but he REALLY shouldn’t have kept it secret … or if he decided to come clean, not on the way to the wedding, half-ass hoping that wedding fever would have her overlook his indiscretion.

Looks like it isn’t just the character of Penny who’s ina shaky marriage.

There have been references to the pharmaceuticals that she sells being full of side effects and she flirts with the clients to sell it.
It is never stated if she runs around on Leonard or not.
But, this is a TV show and you are never going to know more than the writers want you to.
If the marriage is in trouble, they will do what they always do. She will get pregnant and once the kid is born the show will die a slow painful death.

It’s interesting that you raised this. My thought as Penny decided to go ahead with the wedding despite what she had learned was: “She must be pregnant.”

Remember how she wanted to have a long engagement so her family wouldn’t think she was? And then now suddenly she’s fine with a Vegas elopement?

Hmmnnn.

I could, however, see a great spin-off show if Penny gave birth to a died-in-the-wool jock who is into balls and sports from day one.

  • Penny gliding comfortably through her space between their two worlds, occasionally resolving this week’s dilemma by providing translation service between Dad and Boy.

  • Leonard taking surreptitious Parkour classes in an attempt to keep up with his son.

  • “Uncle” Sheldon attending practices and giving him obsessive physics-based football notes after every game.

  • Howard as stay-at-home Dad of his own brood, providing afternoon childcare and swinging like a pendulum between his affection for the little guy and his jealous bitterness toward the world of jock-hood.

  • Raj being startled at the way little girls are drawn to him from toddlerhood and the smooth way he handles it.

Yep, I like it! :stuck_out_tongue:

TruCelt, I must respectfully disagree. To you, it sounds great. To me, it sounds like the very definition of a shark whose entire destiny is to be jumped.

It was as good a season premiere as any aging sitcom that really should have ended a few seasons ago when the characters hadn’t yet morphed into sad caricatures of their characters.

I couldn’t agree more with this statement. The whole thing was heartbreaking. Especially when Sheldon & Amy’s arguing made everyone miss the actual vows. IMO, the writers really let us (the audience) down.

The more I’ve been thinking about this, the sadder I get about it. I completely agree that the writers have let us down.

Think about it: this whole thing has been building since Episode 1. Isn’t that the one where Leonard made the comment about “our babies will be smart and beautiful!”? So the viewers have been watching for 8 seasons, waiting for this to happen…

…and this is what we get for payoff?

All I’ve got to say is that they’d better fix it. Somehow. Maybe the chapel let their license expire so they weren’t qualified to perform marriages, or they filled out the form wrong–something to give them a do-over. And they’d better do it right the second time.

So this show is on Mondays now?

Until Thursday Night Football is over. Then it returns to its normal time slot and Supergirl debuts on Mondays.

Agreed. And soon too. If they drag this on with one whiny confrontation and complication after another, such that we have to wait until the end of this season, I will be royally ticked off!

Having been in the studio audience for a few different sitcoms over the years, I never saw any of them go past Take 3 on any scene (and even that was highly unusual; 2 was standard). So I doubt over-familiarity is the primary problem with not getting enough laughs.
