Sci-Fi with a paranormal “feel”, but not actually paranormal. It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen.
I’ve always heard that clip shows are used at season’s end when the budget is gone. Star Trek TNG did one at the end of season 2? Riker in a coma recalling past events.
I guess the Blacklist has blown their budget and had to finish out the season the best they can.
Classic example of a clip show. Shades of Grayseason 2 finale.
Doing a “clip show” after only two seasons is never a good idea. “Shades of Grey” could have been a lot better if they’d waited to have more prime clippage to chose from.
To put it another way it’s about “fringe science” hence the name.
Basically, they’re able to technobabble the monster or disaster of the week into the baddies using some sort of past experiment of one of the show’s main characters, Walter, a literal mad scientist, played by the most excellent John Noble, and his former partner (mostly unseen, but eventually played by Leonard Nimoy). The main action of the show is Walter’s son and a hot FBI agent investigating whatever is going on while he tries to remember how they can stop it. But that’s just the top layer and it gets into a whole ongoing storyline and mythos and goes way beyond just the story of the week.
That’s the first four seasons anyway. The fifth season was… different.
Wasn’t TNG’s clip show partially the result of a writer’s strike? They had to put out another ep, but had no one to write anything, so hey, just throw together some clips.
Awful results, but other than the Simpsons, clip shows always are*. And even there the first few clip shows on Simpsons were awful.
*not counting fake clip shows, like the one on Community, where none of the clips came from actual episodes
Not exactly a clip show, but Scrubs did an episode once where they recycled a lot of the material just to show the “sameness” of working at a place.
Well, it’s not quite the end of the season, there’s still two eps left after March Madness.
But a clip show episode feels pretty indefensible for a show with this much budget. They’ve already dragged out a lot of reveals longer than they should’ve taken but this was just… ugh.
