I forgot how I ran across this movie, most likely a mention on some blog. Being a sci-fi and post apocalypse sucker I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the movie is, even stranger its basically a sports movie in a post/apoc setting and I hate sports movies so go figure.
The only bad points I can think of are some dodgy scar and injury makeup and the setting of the final act is a bit dodgy scientifically
But in all other respects this movie makes Road Warrior look like a cartoon, I love how there seemed to be a lot of thought put into keeping the setting realistic. We are never told what happened or when the movie is set, which I loved because do you walk around giving exposition on world history in your daily life? I also loved that the stakes and the characters are very realistic, they are only trying to impress the league and become pros and therefore get to live in civilization instead of as subsistence peasants. No saving the world or any of that hogwash.
I own it. Took me more than 3 years to track down someone in New Zealand who was willing and able to make me a copy in Region 1 encode (this was back in about 2001 or 2002, I think, that I finally got my copy).
Parts of the movie are great, parts are so bad it hurt to watch. Overall, I don’t think I’d put it even on par with Mad Max, but it was B-movie fun to watch, sure.
Yea all three Mad Max films are better, its not on my personal top ten or anything but I really appreciated the effort to make a post/apoc movie that didn’t involve mutants or cyborgs, or 80s style Hollywood punks in leather fetish wear
Another obscure film in the post/apoc B-movie genre I recently watched Circuitry Man never even aspires to a setting that makes sense, I understand its part of the appeal and humor but its why I found TBOH refreshing.
Why not? Dead dogs are ubiquitous in a post-apocalyptic wasteland and its not like those people can just go to their local mall and pick out the necessary there.
And real people are actually jugging today. Google “Amtgard” if you don’t believe me.
