Can someone ID this post-apocalypse sci-fi movie for me?

I thought of it this morning as I was waking up. No idea why. I saw it years ago & now I want to add it to my Netflix queue, but can’t remember the name.

It’s set in a post-apocalypse type future. Kinda like Mad Max. There’s this game they play. It’s like football, but a full-on brutal, violent gladiatorial use-whatever-weapons-you-want form of football. The “ball” they use is an animal skull of some kind.

The main character is a young asian girl who’s dream is to make it on one of these teams, which seem to travel around. Getting on a team is more or less her way out of the ghetto, so to speak.

Anyone remember the name? I know, I know… it’s not the greatest movie ever. I’d still like to see it again though, as I remember kinda liking it anyway.

I know the OP already has his answer, but this also sounds a little bit like the later episodes of Gally (AKA Battle Angel Alita).

Never heard of it. Is it good? I’m not big on anime, but you never know. I must confess, I used to watch Dragon Ball Z.
