When we first see José Ferrer in The Caine Mutiny, was he wearing a Marine uniform?
In the book Barney Greenwald was a pilot who crashed in a training flight, the movie shows him with a bandaged hand. I would guess it is a Naval aviators uniform.
In the courtmartial scene he wears a Navy lieutenant’s uniform. But I thought he was wearing an olive green Marine captain’s uniform in the first scene José Ferrer is in.
It’s called Aviation Working Green. The jacket is made from Marine green material but it is a Navy uniform.
Interesting. I’d never heard of it. Do you have a photo?
There’s a drawing of it here, but I can’t find a good photo. Unless you count the movie, of course
In the WW2 time-frame, it was rather common not just for the US but for other world navies, to have certain “communities” within the service wear a “ground establishment” uniform as working-service outfit. In other navies you would see not just Aviators but also Construction Engineers and other such groups that were not trained as “seafarers” wear a “marine” uniform – and even use “land force” ranks or custom “relative rank” (a-la-PHS) rather than naval ranks.
BTW: In WW2 the Navy lawyers did not wear the mill rine JAG device, there wasn’t even a real separate JAG staff corps.
Incidentally, the phrase The straight dope is used in the film.
Perhaps this tidbit deserves its own thread, but I see The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial directed by William Friedkin and starring Kiefer Sutherland as Queeg and Jake Lacy as Mayrk, has just been released. Not a fan of Sutherland, mostly because of 24 Hours, but I’m keen to see this.
In 1988, Robert Altman directed another made-for-television version of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial for Columbia Pictures Television (CPT). The cast included Eric Bogosian as Barney Greenwald, Jeff Daniels as Steve Maryk, Brad Davis as Philip Francis Queeg, Peter Gallagher as John Challee, Kevin J. O’Connor as Tom Keefer, Daniel Jenkins as Willie Keith, and Altman regular Michael Murphy as Captain Blakely.
It was excellent!
I thought that this old thread was reopened to discuss the new The Caine Mutiny Court Martial starring Kiefer Sutherland as Queeg. Alas, it’s on Showtime so I haven’t been able to see it. Is it any good?
I really liked it. BTW, one weird thing I was not expecting is that he updated the dialogue so that the mutiny takes place in 2022.
