I work for the phone company, so I have to deal with these “avengers” on a professional basis :rolleyes:.
Sometimes, I’ve tried to suggest gently that it very well may just have been a wrong number…but, nooooooooo. It’s always a conspriacy with them. “Why would someone from Atlanta, Georgia be calling me?”
Even better is when someone misdials a collect call from a correctional facility! “Did you accept the charges?” “Of course not!” “Well, then…”
People are so freaking paranoid.

We were getting an occasional prank call - like once every few weeks - that was always the same… what sounded like a kid asking if her daddy was there. Always in the middle of the night. They made the mistake of prank calling us two nights in a row, though, and Mr. Amanita took umbrage. He’s usually the most easy-going guy in the world, so when he finally gets annoyed, best look out. He leapt out of bed, dialed *69, and got the number from which the prank call originated. Then he fired up his computer, went to Yahoo, and did a reverse lookup. He called the prankers back within three minutes and said, “Hello, [their actual name] of [their actual address]. I’ve been receiving prank calls from this number, and if it doesn’t stop, there will be hell and lawyers to pay.”
He said the person had answered the phone in the little kid voice and there was loud party noise in the background, but then immediately apologized (in a startled adult voice) and said she would find out who had done this terrible thing and put a stop to it. We never had a prank call like that again.
Moral? If you’re going to be up all night smoking weed and decide to prank call folks, best block *69 before you dial.

The boyfriend runs a jaguar repair shop, and his dad occasionally answers the phone. When I know it’s my man answering, I have some smart-ass comment for him about the cats/pussies he plays with. I didn’t twig fast enough the other day that it was his dad who’d answered, and asked for the lion tamer.
Dad used the loudspeaker to tell his son that he had a tiger by the tail and the son ought to come deal with her.
I’ll be paying for that one.
