The Canadian Caper - a belated thanks

I just heard a story on NPR about 6 US citizens who were saved in Iran by the members of the Canadian embassy.

Back in 1979 when the US embassy was invaded and hostages taken, 6 US citizens were outside the walls. The were hidden by Canadian citizens and eventually escaped with the help of Canada.

I am old enough that I should know about this, but I was young enough then that I didn’t pay attention to world news.

It was a facinating story and even though I am years late: My thanks to our friends to the north!

We took in a lot of American planes on September 11th, too, to help you catch up.

It made a big splash in Canada at the time, because the embassy claimed they got them out of Iran disguised as Canadians. The editorial cartoonists had a field day with that, imaging them festooned with Canadian flags, or beaver pelts or the like. Or learning to say “eh?” and that the last letter of the alphabet is “zed”.
