The CanaDoper Café (2012 edition of The great, ongoing Canadian current events and politics thread.)

I just want AC in my car. Sitting on the Decarie or the Met in afternoon rush hour traffic without AC sucks.

So how come you don’t have A/C? (Dans la voiture.)

Is there anything at all of interest to see near Pinawa, Manitoba? (next month.)

I’ll be there on business; evenings are free and one Sunday afternoon?

Anyone?

Because my car is a 16 year old base model Toyota Tercel? It doesn’t even have a clock, and the windows are manual. I had to have a CD player installed, because it didn’t even have a tape deck. I’m 400km away from 325 000km, and then I will seriously consider buying a new car: I need to get one by Dec 15 because I don’t want to buy winter tires for the Tercel again. AC is a must in whatever new car I buy.

I don’t have AC in the house because the ancient wiring predates the bible and when we tried to plug one in we nearly set fire to the house (which doesn’t cool very well at all…)
Looks like I’ll be going to Quebec City this week…unfortunately, for my grandfather’s funeral :frowning: He was 97 and it’s not really a surprise, but it’s still really sad. I miss him, even though it’s been a while since I’ve seen him.

You’re not too far from Steinbach, MB where they have a very interesting Mennonite Heritage Village. We were there last summer; they have a Bible there that is one of the first ever printed (very similar to a Gutenberg Bible) - it’s been passed down in families for generations.

The Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg is also worth a visit - you can get your picture taken holding a brick of solid gold!

Thanks. That’s the kind of stuff I’m interested in hearing. Unfortunately it looks like about a 2 hour drive to Winnipeg.

What else is in the area, closer than Winnipeg? Probably nothing, right?

For Pinawa, a paddle or a hike perhaps?

Or just for shits and giggles, put on a hazmat suit and wander about the town while looking studiously at a black box with dials.

Well, that is in fact the purpose of my business. And I just may be wearing a Tyvek suit and respirator at some point.

Decommissioning?

Auditing.

Dump the hazmet suit for mosquito netting.

Oh yeah, definitely do this.

Hmm, Grand Beach on Lake Winnipeg is an hour and 23 minutes away - that might be a bit far, too, but man, that is one hell of a nice beach.

Sorry to hear that.

Auditing what?

The Atomic Energy site.

Any idea whether this has changed?

I’m wondering whether the audit is run-of-the-mill or whether it means SNC-Lavelin (which now owns AECL) is considering a nuke plant there.

Or maybe Lavelin simply wants to get rid of it.

I’m not sure what your point is, and I need to remain circumspect, but SNC-Lavelin acquired the commercial business of AECL only; i.e. the power reactor (CANDU) business.

The rest of AECL remains a crown corporation and is dedicated to nuclear experimentation, research and development, waste management, and medical isotope production.

I’m not sure if this is your scene, and I’m not sure if you’ll have the time to make this worthwhile - There are some beautiful wilderness areas in Whiteshell Provincial Park, as well as a lot of campgrounds that were always too full of urban party animals for my taste.

Winnipeg is at least an hour and a half’s drive away, but there is lots to do there. You might want to send a PM to ‘In Winnipeg’, who is the only Doper who immediately comes to mind who is, well, in Winnipeg. (There’s someone else who used to live there, and who jumped to the town’s defence when I was making it seem too rough and run down. Can’t remember who it was, though. It is rough and run down, but it has a whack of creative types who make for a fantastic arts scene.)

Interestingly, Victoria Beach or anything else on Lake Winnipeg, would be much closer…

Thanks Le Ministre. Honestly, Pinawa sounds about as remote as Chalk River. Great parks and wildlife, but not too interesting for business tourists. Algonquin park is nearby Chalk River, and is splendorous, but not much of an attraction for a few hours during a business trip.

I was hoping there would be an out-of-the-way gem somewhere. Cat Whisperer had me excited about the Mennonite Museum, but it’s a couple of hours away too. Ah well, maybe next time I can go during hockey season. That would be worth the drive.

Laurentian View Dairy (a.k.a. Deep River Dair Bar).
