The Carnevale in the Tyrol

Carnevale is coming up…I am familiar with the Brazilian version (which is all about sex, dancing, and partying).
But in the alpine region of Germany/Austria, etc., it seems entirely different-you have parades featuring people wearing bizarre masks-what is that all about? There seems to be little in common between these celebrations, and the Brazilian variety-why is that?

Different origins - I’ve seen it said that some of the Alpine German Carnival traditions are a holdoverfrom pagan times - the masked figures are the entourage of a pagan goddess. Seems like Krampus is related too.
