He’s not your type.
ABC News is reporting that director Robert Altman has died. He was on my short list for 2007.
Dammit! I just started thinking about my list this morning because I figured I’d actually take part in the Pool next year, and was considering Altman. Shoot.
Oh, and it’s a shame, because he really is a wonderful director. [/obligatory non-callous-bitch-with-issues addition]
Lebanese Christian Cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel has been shot dead in Beirut. The Syrians, after a short recess, have come back to offing Lebenese critics. Could Walid Jumblatt be far behind? For the sake of my sorry list, I will wait with baited breath.
Here’s an article about Pierre Gemayel’s death.
Incidentally, I had a dream the other night in which I was explaining the concept of the Death Pool to Danny DeVito. I mentioned that there were several possible strategies – a participant might choose to go for high-scoring longshots like Lindsay Lohan, or opt to select such “quantity not quality” figures as Gerald Ford, Art Linkletter, and Earl Butz. I even told Danny that some Dopers scour the Internet for information on celebs who are terminally ill.
He seemed interested, and asked how much it cost to play. To emphasize the bargain nature of SDMB membership, I asked DeVito how much he paid when he went out for breakfast. His wife, Rhea Perlman (who had not been in the dream up until then) shouted across the room that the last time she and Danny had gone to a Beverly Hills restaurant for a morning meal, it had ended up costing about $1000 because the couple had been joined by a bunch of friends. I then told Danny that that kind of money would cover about seventy years’ worth of membership (nice to know my basic math skills exist even when I’m not fully conscious!), and that I would protect his identity if he decided to join and I recognized him as one of the new members. Then I woke up with the details fresh in my mind.
Andre Waters, who played safety for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1984 to '93 and closed out his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals in '94 and '95, died Monday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It’s a sign. You should put them both on next years list.
he might come up short.
As is so often the case in SDMB threads, The Onion has provided a relevant link. Some ideas for the 2007 Death Pool can be found here.
Betty Comden, who collaborated with Adolph Green on the lyrics to such songs as New York, New York and Singin’ in the Rain, has died at the age of 87.
I had her on my list, as I’d seen her perform a couple of years ago and it was obvious this grande dame was getting very frail. One of the few remaining stars from the golden age of American Theater.
“Where has the time all gone to?
Haven’t done half the things we want to.
Oh well, we’ll catch up
Some Other Time…”
Pat Dobson, who was one of four twenty-game-winners on the 1971 Baltimore Orioles’ pitching staff, has died at the age of 64. Dobson, who won 122 games during his career, later served as a pitching coach and scout. At the time of his death, he was special assistant to San Francisco Gianyts general manager Brian Sabean.
Hall of Fame boxer Willie Pep died at age 84. He had a 26 year career and had a record of 230-11-1.
230-11-1.
He was listed as 5th among the best fighters of the 20th century by a 1999 AP writers poll.
He was also on my list as one of the top 5 “I thought they were already dead” celebrities.

The host usually starts a new thread for the next year’s entries - we don’t usually add them to this thread (certainly adds to the host’s woes when they’re trying to keep track of everyone’s picks).
**cazzle ** is right, please post your 2007 list on the new thread that will appear soon.
Yeah, well but. I wanted to get in first.
I’m still paring down my list but where’s the new thread?
And does anyone else feel that the only reason some of these people are still alive is because of our dang lists?
