Ephraim Katzir, who served as President of Israel from 1973 to '78, has died at the age of 93. Katzir. an internationally renowned biophysicist, had previously headed the military research and development unit of the Haganah (underground Jewish defense organization) when the eventual Jewish state was still controlled by the British under the terms of the Palestine Mandate.

Randy Smith, who once held the National Basketball Association’s record for consecutive games played, has died at the age of 60. Smith began his NBA career with the Buffalo Braves (now Los Angeles Clippers) after starring at Buffalo State College. His ironman streak of 906 straight contests from 1972 to '83 was surpassed in 1997 by A.C. Green.

Richard Jacobs, who teamed with brother David to buy the Cleveland Indians baseball team in 1986 and helped send the beleaguered club to its first World Series since 1954, has passed away at the age of 84. After David died, Richard owned the club until selling it in 2001. In 1994, the Tribe’s new ballpark opened as Jacobs Field, and hosted World Series games in '95 and '97. The park is now known as Progressive Field after insurance firm Progressive Corp. purchased naming rights last year.

Omar Bongo, who had been the world’s longest-serving non-monarchial head of state, has died at the age of 73. Following the death of founding president Leon M’Ba, Bongo had led the African nation of Gabon since 1967.

Woodie Held, who hit 179 home runs during a Major League Baseball career that started in 1954 and ended in '69, has died at the age of 77. Although he played shortstop for the Cleveland Indians during his prime, Held acquired his World Series ring as a member of the Baltimore Orioles following their 1966 Fall Classic sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ironic that John Atkinson’s death is near the anniversery of his day of gaining “celebrity” status.
