Baker is the boss and what she says goes, but I always figured if it’s 2013 where the person died, then it’s good only for the 2013 game. If you’re celebrating New Year’s in Tokyo and drop dead after midnight Tokyo time, then you died in 2013, even if it won’t be 2013 for a while by Chicago time.
Now, SUBMISSIONS to the game have to be submitted by midnight Chicago time, so the train leaves the station at the same time for everybody, everywhere. So if you’re in Los Angeles, your picks have to be submitted by 10 p.m. or you’re outta luck for this year’s game, got it?

I can see that next year’s OP will have to address this issue.
I think that a35362’s figuring is correct. Submissions are different from actual deaths(thank heavens) So Down Under posters will be submitting entries on their Jan. !. But if, say, their head of state died on their Jan. 1, that would only be for 2013.
My reasoning is practical. How often will a celeb die in that small window of time? But if submissions were all by local midnight, I’d have to calculate 24 different sets of time for posters. And I’ll bet we have at least one player in most zones. Well, half anyway.
This game is fun, that’s why I do it. I’ve even got my own mother, a gentle soul, looking out for me. She called the other day and asked if I’d heard about the health problems of GHW Bush.

No problem–not likely to be an issue, but you never can tell. So “official” time of death will be local time where the death occurred.

The youngest celebrity to die this year was 38 year old Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, a Mexican drug lord who died in a shootout with police, then got his body stolen from the funeral home by his supporters.
