Novelist Chinua Achebe has died at 82.
Pietro Mennea, whose clocking of 19.72 seconds in the 200-meter dash was the world record from 1979 to 1996, has died at the age of 60. Mennea won the gold medal in the event at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
Rise Stevens, whose portrayal of the title character in Carmen was especially noteworthy during her two-decade career on the Metropolitan Opera stage, passed away at 99. I’m sure I’m not the only Doper who knew Rise’s name primarily as a crossword clue…

Its a shame he blew his wad so early. He tried to go straight but his career went limp. He had to pull out early and got into alcohol and probably some blow, jobs were hard to come by.
