What I think would be the bestthing to do is have a 24 hour grace period. Deaths will still only count if they were in the calender year in question, but given that sometimes it takes a while for the news to be reported, we could have one extra day for reporting. No longer I think, because most of us players keep tabs on our dead pool picks, especially in the last week of the year.
One year I won the Final Hours award. My first points came on 12/27, when Benazir Bhutto came through for me.
It would disrupt my incredible streak of scoreless years in this game.
Not in Kansas.
The Office of Vital Statistics receives and preserves vital records for events (births, deaths, marriages, and divorces) which occur in Kansas.
<snip>
Birth, death, marriage, and divorce records (vital records) in Kansas are not public records. Certified copies of vital records are released to the person named on the record, immediate family, a legal representative, or anyone who can prove a direct interest, such as a named beneficiary or someone who jointly owns property with the person whose record is requested. The record must be necessary for the determination of personal or property rights. Proof of legal representation, direct interest, or written authorization is required if the requestor is not named on the record or an immediate family member.
Just a hunch, but I’m guessing that the Office of Vital Statistics wouldn’t regard standings in the Deathpool as a direct interest.
Actress Anna Wing died July 7. She was 98.
Dutch Prince Johan Friso . A waste of 66 points!

How did nobody have the prince in a coma on their list?

I missed that. Points for me, and a unique pick!

OK, it’s Fred Phelps. I live in Topeka, and the death of this person is something I didn’t think one could keep under wraps. But I’ve “been hearing stuff” and just a little while ago my mother called. In the course of our chat she mentioned an acquaintance that said she’d heard he’d died.
But it’s all third hand at best. And how it could not be leaked, it it were true, I’d have no idea.
Does your mother know what you do?
No one notices the Dutch. I hate pointless deaths.
William P. Clark , who rose from campaign volunteer to one of President Ronald Reagan’s most trusted advisers, has died. He was 81. Clark died Saturday at his ranch home in the central California town of Shandon after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, according to his son.

Yes, yes she does. She is a little squicked out about it though.

With the death of Anna Wing I still have a firm grip on last place among those who have points. Two deaths, both unique, three points total.

Think of it this way - you’ve tripled your score just now!

You had me excited there for a minute. Too bad it’s not the right Fred Phelps. Good grief, I’d hate to have that name.
Here in Topeka there are at least two other Phelps families. I know a guy from one of them, and he gets sick and tired of being asked if he’s a WBC member.
