"The Chair Company", new comedy series by Tim Robinson

It’s on HBO Max; first episode came out last night.

Robinson is the king of awkward comedy – if you like his other stuff I think you’ll love this one. I thought it was hilarious. Filmed almost like a prestige mystery/thriller.

So it’s a straight comedy? the trailer I watched made it look like a Temu Severance. I’ve watched his other shows and loved them, still miss Detroiters.

I suppose there’s some drama, but it’s such awkward and absurd drama that I’d consider it a comedy. But it’s not a “normal” comedy - very specific to Tim Robinson’s style.

The first episode didn’t draw .e in but I’m going to give it another shot.

Never heard of him. What is “awkward” comedy?

Robinson’s specific type of comedy is usually someone who can’t let go of something ridiculous, or can’t admit something obvious, or otherwise is unwilling to yield in some self destructive manner.

Something like this.

Second episode wasn’t too bad.

I’m loving it. Parts of this episode were shot like a horror movie.

The shirt store clerk was amazing.

Agree! One of the fun things about this is that, if you were to look at the script, it would appear to be an absurd comedy, but it is shot and scored like a thriller.

I don’t want to get all pretentious or anything, but we are sort of in a Pynchonian time right now, with his new book, and a popular movie loosely based on an earlier book of his (not to mention the actual current reality) and this show comes right out of something like The Crying Of Lot 49.

I thought this would be the “Hat” sketch. But I understand as that is NSFW.

The scene of Ron quietly riding shotgun in the car of the guy who beat him with a lead pipe the day before as he laughs his ass off at the crude Jerky-Boys-esque routine on the radio absolutely killed me.

I’ve watched three episodes. To me, The Chair Company is missing the sustained off-the-wallness that made Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave so great. Still, I’m eager to see what Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin come up with next.

It brings to mind Serge from Beverly Hills Cop. I hope it works well for that actor like it did for Bronson Pinchot.

Latest episode was great and dug into Ron’s state of mind and the family dynamic.

It was glossed over, but I think the investor guy in the jeep might have been concussed, and maybe even died after that. Maybe this is all an elaborate revenge plot.
