1st case in point: Marley’s “Grease” costume keeps getting tighter and tighter so she figures she’s gaining weight. It was really Kitty (“New Quinn”) secretly re-sewing them. Cue Kitty telling Marley all about purging in an effort to make her go bulimic.
Umm…Marley, you dumb shit, obviously all your other clothes still fit. If it’s just your costume getting tighter then it’s obviously being tampered with.
Marley is pretty but dumber than a sack of hammers.
2nd case in point: Why the hell would Rachael and Kurt travel back to Ohio to watch their old high school’s musical when they’re both settling into their new lives in New York, if not to cause drama with their exes? Assholes.
3rd: Speaking of, why would Rachael’s dance teacher, who obviously has it in for Rachael, offer her unused frequent flyer points to travel to said musical if she doesn’t have something up her sleeve? Rachael is a moron for trusting that woman for even a second.
Sue Sylvester’s character is just an evil cartoon.
I’m only watching “Glee” now out of habit. That last episode insulted my intelligence far too much.
I am not aware of anybody who watches Glee for the writing. In fact, one of my ideas for Fox is to remove all of the non-singing segments from episodes, edit them into half-hour shows, and air them at 7:00 Eastern on Sundays rather than, for example, year-old repeats of Bob’s Burgers.
Did you also notice that, apparently, nobody in the entire school can sing except for the 12 kids in the glee club? Otherwise, why wouldn’t they have understudies for the school musical (which, obviously, they didn’t have, as when Unique was told he couldn’t play Rizzo, they got Santana back - so much for being a “high school” musical)?
I for one treat Glee as a combination of (a) spoof and (b) infomercial for the albums and iTunes songs.
That bothered me too, having Santana come back to play Rizzo (with no rehearsal!) Plus the scenes where Finn and Rachael were imagining themselves as Danny & Sandy were just creepy, IMO. They should have let the new characters shine.
I think they should have ended the show with the kid’s graduation, then made a spin-off for Rachael & Kurt in New York, with cameos from the other actors. They’re “beating a dead horse” now as far as I’m concerned. I did not enjoy the last episode at all.
Speaking of Glee, anyone know the real-world reason that the teacher played by Matthew Morrison is absent from the show? The in-show explanation is that he had to go to Washington on sabbatical, but presumably there’s another explanation.
I don’t think its any more “fantasy” than when it started. Will’s wife’s fake pregnancy? Sue’s ability to get limitless funds for Cheerios? A 21st century high school where kids walk around covered in Slushie and the administration does nothing? But eventually, the ridiculousness of it gets old.
My family discovered Glee only recently; my daughter loves it. (I enjoy it somewhat too.) I’ll soon be buying Season 3 DVD’s for my daughter so I’m keeping my eyes half-closed to avoid spoilers.
My initial reaction to Glee was similar to my initial reaction to Dexter: very unrealistic. But soon that became appealing: they’re spoofs, like Batman or such, but lower-keyed.
I’m surprised to hear complaints that the characters are dumb or unrealistic. It’s intentional.
But the show is also asking viewers to have a real emotional connection with the characters. You can’t both portray them purely as caricatures and also have us sincerely care about them. It’s either one or the other.
Maybe not you but it’s very clear to me that there is some subset of people who can and do if the youtube comments I’ve seen are anything to go by. Man, some people canNOT get over kurt and whassisface breaking up. Frankly, I’m surprised Jocky prep boy stayed with mousy whinger as long as he did.
(Note, I don’t watch the show except in 5 or 10 minute bursts when I flip past it on tv. It’s quite possible I’ve missed critical plot points, in fact, it’s a certainty that I have.)
Frankly, I’m surprised Tina didn’t alter Rizzo’s costume so it didn’t fit Santana. At least it occurred to the writers to have a moment where she’s shown to be angry.
I would agree that this season they should change the name from Glee to Gloom.
Watching only from habit now…and that might soon turn into not bothering anymore.
We only like the NYC story - as at least that is somewhat original and they don’t pretend the singers/dancers are amateurs.
I think Glee is generally pretty darn stupid, but for whatever reason this subplot in particular just grated on my nerves. You’d have to be a COMPLETE idiot to not realize something was being tampered with, particularly when they said something to the effect of “It’s like you’ve gone up 2 sizes overnight!”
The casting at the time was fairly adventurous for a prime time show and the characters compelling
The themes especially in the first season managed to be just a little topical and subversive enough to be interesting but still fun.
I like seeing happy portrayals of gays and minorities. See above 2.
Overall it was initially billed as a sort of “High school musical” that grownups can also enjoy and it actually worked pretty well, I think within the last couple of seasons it’s kind of gotten off track and lost a lot of the charm of the first season, maybe because it must now address a wider, younger audience.
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t ever meant to be some kind of gritty realistic portrayal of high school life, and who the hell would watch that anyway?
Judging from what I’ve seen online, basically everyone had exactly this same problem with the episode. It might have made somewhat more sense if the costume had been altered the night of rather than this being something that happened repeatedly. If nothing else you’d think Tina would realize the costume looked much smaller than what she originally put together.
When I was in high school I tended to wear baggy clothing and thus might not have noticed weight gain that would be obvious in a more fitted costume, but this doesn’t seem to be the case with Marley. But given that she’s 1) a teen girl and 2) has a very obese mother, it should have been pretty easy to play on her body image issues without resorting to altering her costume. Perhaps they were just trying to make this storyline slightly different from the very similar one in season one where Rachel’s rivalry with Quinn led her to attempt to make herself throw up in the school bathroom.
Are you complaining that they didn’t have reasons, or that you don’t like their reasons? Because their reasons for going back to Ohio were discussed on the show. Aside from sentimental desire to see their old friends doing a musical at their old high school, Kurt wanted to see Blaine again. Rachel didn’t actually want to go but went along mostly for Kurt’s sake.
One of my big problems with this season is that the new characters are basically retreads of the characters who graduated last season, only played by actors with more generic TV-quality good looks. Something I liked about Glee early on was that a lot of the performers were, by TV standards (not necessarily real life standards), not very attractive. But most of the young characters introduced after the first season look like all the other attractive young people you see on TV.
I don’t think so. Mine didn’t, nor did any of schools my wife has taught at. I can’t imagine convincing a high school student to learn a role that he/she probably wouldn’t actually perform. She even once had to bring in a past grad to replace a lead who didn’t work out. Heck, she once threatened to replace a lead with ME if he didn’t shape up.
I remember when the show first came on the air, someone around here was praising the realistic storylines and I used the Slushie thing as a “Wait a minute!” example. But they were serious, and thought the Slushie thing was the most realistic part of Glee. To steal from a better piece of entertainment, as if.
And I have a reflexive hatred of Lea Michele after watching an interview where she goes on and on at length about how “You don’t normally see women that look like me in a Hollywood production.”
 <- My eyes rolled all the way back in my head.
“I’ve come to pitch a great idea! It’s all about a bunch of high school kids in a glee club, and what goes on among them. Ratings will go through the roof!”
