In the spirit of the Imitation Hemingway contest and the Bulwer-Lytton, I hereby launch this award for the poster and thread closest in style and spirit to our vaunted Scylla. Rules are subject to the whims of anyone willing to make some up. Rather than enumerating Scyllaesque qualities, judging will be holistic. So that we don’t all hammer the search function at once, here’s a few examples of the Master’s recent work. As you can see, he’s all over the place (and this sample is from only two fora), so the field is wide open.
To get the ball rolling, I nominate wishbone for this Fisherman’s Saga. While this fine work stands splendidly on its own merit, it has many features of Scylla’s best, to wit:
-
The author paints a vivid picture of life on a fishing boat through attention to detail. I swear I could smell the fish[sub]but then I had salmon for dinner last night, so …[/sub]
-
The author gently spoofs another well-known work, in this case Forrest Gump.
-
The OP deals with several of Scylla’s favorite themes, including cooking and man’s work.
And lastly, he brings the entire work into perspective by closing with simple personal message that explains his motivation in writing as well as poking fun at himself.
I invite one and all to nominate worthy OPs. And a note to Scylla: sorry, big guy, you’re not eligible. Stick around, though; if this flies, someone’s bound to start the Imitation Fenris contest.
