As honorary chairman of the CKDH Appreciation Society, it falls to me to open this thread, to which all are invited to contribute. Chip in with your favourite CK moment, witticism, bon mot, post, etc. etc. For me, it’s his man of the people appeal, his mod that doesn’t seem like a mod persona, his easy charm, good grace, and essential humanity.
Shhh! This is for us non-Pit types who like to throw the occasional bouquet. MPSIMS and the BBQ Pit are like parallel universes. We don’t want the likes of Starving Artist and Shodan setting fire to this thread and using it as kindling for their latest bonfire!
I’ve actually got history with our most respected CK Dexter Haven. Oh shush up, it’s not like I’ve had his love child or anything. Not yet, anyway.
I think I wrote to him with a Scientific type of query back when we were on AOL, and he was kindly and helpful. Of course, he was also strikingly brilliant and sublimely intellectual in the accessable way that is what our Perfect Master strives for on a daily basis.
All around, a fine funny adult who knows a lotta shit. I’d buy him a steak dinner. Might even buy him a lobstah dinner !!
I like Dex. He is always courteous enough to send a “thanks for pointing that out” e-mail when you hit “Report”, and I like his avuncular-but-occasionally-grouchy persona: he seems very…human. {Tomndeb is so unfailingly patient and reasonable that I suspect him of being an alien infiltrator not yet accustomed to our Earth ways :D} And who can begrudge him the odd flare-up when he has to wade - for no remuneration other than a free coffee cup - through imbecility and hissy-fits on a daily basis? Would those who are so quick to Pit Mods and Admins for being occasionally human be prepared to do the same? I’d be banning people out of spite, caprice, and sheer pissedoffedness by the third day.
Is G.G. the lead - the fellah who seems to get greyer and fatter in the face every time I see a new trailer for “CSI 1V: Tulsa”? I’m afraid I never watch any of the CSI series these days. I remember when it first started up here, I got all excited, because I love a good thriller. I was addicted for a while to ‘New Detectives’ and ‘Medical Detectives’ on Discovery, even with the repeated-for-retards style, narrated by a guy seemingly out to turn a gripping desperate-Denver-housewife-too-careless-when-she-set-fire-to-house-children-and-hubby story into 15 minutes of moralising tedium.
“Wise, patient and enigmatic”. Vulnerable too, I’d say. A devastating combination in terms of attracting the women. (Don’t I know?) I sense some strain with Cecil.
When I had my “What does the CK in C.K. Dexter Haven stand for” thread, why, he moved it out of GQ all on his own and into CS for me. And he wasn’t even mad about it at that! Heh.
But seriously, I like him overall. I like all the mods and admins on here, overall.
Gosh, I dunno what to say. Thanks for the kind words.
[sub]This probably counts as a negative in the Moderator contest for who has the most Pit threads.[/sub]
You know, last year at the beginning, I actually was going to start something like this (a variation of The Celebrity Death Pool, if you will). I was going to call it "The Mod Pit Pool (and I’m being 100 percent serious). I was going to have members make bets on which mod or admin would have a pit thread dedicated soley to them under many rules, of course. One being You can’t make one just to win the contest, obviously…and other important ones.
But I figured it’d never be allowed and if made, closed just as fast. I DID think, however, that it’s probably a good idea for a topic to have in the private mod forum and (who knows?) maybe one you guys already do.
CK has been a rock on the side of reason since I first met him on the aol SDMB. I always lost when he was leading the games night. He is way smarter than I. He could set me up like a ten pin.
In the long, long ago, we were on AOL and had a nightly hosted chat room discussion. I think that TubaDiva and I are the only chat hosts from those days who are still Moderators, but several of the ol’ chat hosts were moderators for a time, and wrote staff reports – the likes of **Songbird, JillGat, Ken, ** and others.
Because it wasn’t easy to come up with discussion topics, I often ran “games” – movie quote identification, or some of Will Shortz’s puzzles, or similar. (My favorite was the all-spoonerism night.) We can’t revive it, because (1) we don’t have the easy chatroom access that we had on AOL, and (2) we’ve got zillions more people who might participate, and (3) we don’t have staff to host. Alas.
Gus, I confess to memory lapse: you had a different screen name then, and I’ve forgot it. But thanks for the reminder of those days of yesteryear.
