What’s your point? I’m no Republican (or Democrat for that matter) and it most certainly is as inappropriate to call ATF agents Nazis as it is to call INS agents Nazis. Duh.
In any event, it was “gestapo” that bothered me, not the choice of footwear. I wasn’t offended. I never said that it was an offensive remark. I did say, correctly, that it was a moronic analogy.
Jesus, the anti-PC’ers are every bit as bad as the PC’ers themselves.
The point is this is the second time i’ve seen you go off on someone for using Gestapo. Whoop te fucking do, it is just a word. Gestapo Gestapo Gestapo. Oh, no, hajario thinks i’m a moron now. i guess i’ll go cry me a Mississippi…
And i called you the Gestapo Gestapo, not that you said that we shouldn’t use the word. People who can’t read are just as bad as the Gestapo Gestapo, and you are both!!
Matt, while I appreciate your attempt to lay the “Canadian government mistreats aboriginals” hijack to rest, I think it’s fair to point out that, in recent memory, the Canadian government has been considerably more egregious in its transgressions against natives… particularly since this whole thread is taking place in the shadow of Godwin. Remember that the Canadian eugenics program was used as a justification and a model for the German one, which was simply carried to its logical conclusion by the Nazis. More shamefully, ours continued decades after that sort of thing stopped happening in Germany. 1979 was a bit late to finally agree that “maybe this whole ‘eugenics’ thing is a bad idea…” At least our programs weren’t explicitly racist-- just in their application. Whatever.
"Those who do not remember the past… " yadda yadda yadda.
Hey, you won’t have an argument from me. My first political protest was a sit-in on the lawn of the Manitoba legislature at age 8, against the treatment of the Kahnesatake First Nation at Oka. I’m a New Democrat - remember?
I just think it’s a damn feeble argument to use in this context.
I’m constantly amazed by the folks around here who consider hyperbole to be an offense against Cecil. It’s an overstatement, yes, but (nearly) all’s fair in public discourse.
An opinion with which I concur completely- I just didn’t think that comparing the U.S. treatment of aboriginal folk in modern times was the best rebuttal. (And to be honest, it’s my belief that way too few people are aware that we had eugenics programs in the U.S. and Canada at all, so I’ll use any excuse to jump up-and-down screaming “It can happen here!”)
You know I have nothing but respect, admiration, and love for ya. Or you do now, at any rate.
OK, you expect some hassle if you happen to share the same name as a criminal. But is anyone doing something?
How often can this guy be arrested? Once per visit home? Once a year? Once a week? If he changes his name to John Smith can he go two days without being arrested? If he changes his name to George Bush and nicks a car will there be a big FBI/CIA shootout at the whitehouse?
It’s my understanding that none of the World Trade Center terrorists had a Canada connection. There was the guy who wanted to bomb Seattle on NYE 1999, but he was caught.
The good doctor was released last night after five days in a detention center. His lawyer and Canadian foreign affairs officials finally convinced the authorities they had the wrong man.
A friend of mine, on probation for shooting streetlights with a BB gun, was visiting his probation officer for the first time.
He sits down and she opens the file. And looks quite shocked. And flips pages. And continues increasing he look of shock. Finally she asks, “What are you here for?”
My friend says shyly, “Shooting street lights?”
“Hold on a second,” she says, and leaves the room.
Long story short, some thug who was busted for B&E and armed robbery and all sorts of crazy shit had made up an SS#. IT was my friends. Probation officer finally comments, after working things out, “If you had been even close to dark-skinned you would have had some explaining to do.”
