The Closure of the "Father Solanus Casey Was A Living Saint Thread"

I’m a Christian and it makes me happy. There’s one data point for you.

Could you please explain how this rule change,

is a win?

Note: I’m not asking what you think now I’m asking about what was in your head when you posted this.

I’m a Jew, and it makes me happy as well, so — two?

I’m an atheist. I was last happy in 1997, specifically June 17th.

Speaking for myself, Jew, I don’t really care about the rule change. I find most witnessing tedious and stupid regardless of forum.

Read what the nice mod said, please.

Okay, but: there’s a forum for debates, and witnessing isn’t a debate, and witnessing had been a hallmark of that forum and has now been moved out of that forum — and, well, that’s a win for the forces of reason, is what it is.

If moving witnessing threads to forums that are even less open to being contentious can be considered a win that is.
Not that those two are all snugly puppies and cute kittens but, well, just saying.

Over say the last two or three years, how many GD witnessing threads would now be in a different forum? I don’t think very many but it could easily be that I missed a lot of them.

I think once upon a time great debates was for anything that doesn’t really have an answer, so witnessing went there. Now it’s restricted to actual debates. So witnessing really doesn’t fit. The mods discussed the issue, and agreed that stating a strongly held opinion generally belongs in IMHO, and testifying about the effect of something on your life generally belongs in MPSIMS. So we think that even if those threads are opinions about religion, or the good that your religion has brought you, they belong where other threads of that general nature belong.

There hasn’t been a lot of witnessing threads. Oddly enough Jim_B started one of them and it was far less rambling and would have been a good fit for IMHO. But I moved it to GD based on our rules.

I’m a Jewish atheist, and I’m happy, so I’m not sure if that’s another point or not.

(But count me among those who isn’t clear why moving witnessing threads out of GD would specifically make atheists happy. Would love an explanation.)

Yeah, i don’t see that, either. Except that i think it should make most posters happy to have religious threads treated like normal threads, rather than have a subset of religious threads have a weird exception.

Apparently an explanation requires someone getting into an argument . . . with who is also an interesting unanswered question.

Agreed with all of this, with the addition that I find witnessing threads tedious not only because witnessing itself is tedious and stupid, but because the inevitably tired and repetitive pile-ons are equally tedious.

A lot of people are addicted to feeling persecuted.

Some of them want to use you; some of them want to get used by you. Some of them want to abuse you; some of them want to be abused.

If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.
John 15:19–20

For some Christians being persecuted/hated is a feature not a bug and any criticism of any of their positions is by definition persecution/hatred of their Christianity and never that their position is in itself loathsome.
