I’m surprised I haven’t seen a thread for this yet. I just received my copy yesterday and I am impressed. Two beautifully hard bound volumes in a sleeve covered in gorgeous, full color, Gary Larson artwork. The set weighs in at a whopping 19 pounds and has over 4,300 drawings. Everything from 1980 to 1994, plus a few that were never published because of “racy” content.
I haven’t been able to read it much but I did get through a few of the dedications and forewords. The foreword by Steve Martin was meh. Nothing to funny. What was a really interesting read was the essay by Larson’s former Editor. It gave a really good look into the relationship between an editor and a cartoonist. Gary’s love for his brainchild. And what it’s like to be the only man in the world who can explain every Far Side cartoon.
From flipping through the first volume one sees all the cartoons are arranged in chronological order. Each decade has its own chapter and the original print date is listed above each panel. The majority of the panels are kept in their original black and white print, which is a little bit of a disappointment because the ones that they did choose to color in were done beautifully.
All in all it was the best hundred bucks I ever spent. I can’t wait to start reading the books and start seeing my favorite panels.
My boyfriend sent me that link last night. I think it was a hint, but I really can’t afford $100 to get him that. Well, it’s not exactly like I’d let him touch it. Hmmm, time to relook the finances.
There was a thread about it once it was announced, but that was quite a few months ago. I’ll definitely be picking it up, but being that I own quite a few of the books already, it won’t happen as soon as it normally would.
The New York Daily News has (thankfully) replaced The Family Circus for the time being with classic Far Side, highlighting Larson’s favorite cartoons to promote the book.
I’ll be sure to pick this one up. And if I don’t, you have every right to knock three times and summon the Floating Head of Death on me.
It’s on my list of things to buy in the coming months. Which also happens to be the list of things I’ll see in stores and sigh over and wonder why I never found all that pirate treasure. I mean I must have dug a million holes at the beach when I was young. Ah well.
Lion King DVD, The Two Towers EE DVD, The Indiana Jones Trilogy DVD, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI, Finding Nemo DVD, FLCL DVD, The Complete Farside.
It comes last cause it’s so expensive and I already have all the galleries plus the pre-history so I can almost pretend I have every one if I tape all my books together.
More than a thousand Far Side cartoons were never published in book form and appear in the complete collection for the first time since they were printed in the newspaper.
Stop that! fingers in ears LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!!! I can pretend, I can wait.
Sigh. Well, it is almost my birthday and Christmas isn’t too far either. Here’s hoping for lots of dough.
Something tells me I won’t sleep for a long time, now that I know I’m missing something this important to my mental well-being. Where can I get that money? Will the ends justify the means if I rob a liquor store?
89.77 at Buy.com, but I still got it from Amazon. I pay sales tax at Buy, which wipes out the price difference.
There was no way I wasn’t going to get this. On my personal list of the greatest newspaper comics, this is the top single panel comic and nearly cracks the top 10 overall. I considered selling my galleries on e-bay, but decided they’d make good clipping copies and kept them.
