The couch still smells like dog pee.

Last week, Captain peed on the couch (a LOT) as a side effect of the whole “traumatic event in the back yard” thing. I mean, there must have been a hell of a lot of pee, because I sprayed and sprayed and sprayed with Nature’s Miracle and when I move, I can still smell it. I think it soaked way, way in. Ideas?

Sounds like the urine has soaked into the couch stuffing and just spraying Nature’s Miracle will not penetrate far enough. I have heard that you literally have to soak such an area in order for the NM to have the desired effect. Even then it may be a loss.

Are your cushion covers removable? If so, I’d remove them and treat them separately. Then hose the foam cushions outside. Really saturate them, then treat them with NM and let them air dry in the sun.

Did you ever figure out what happened? Has Captain gotten any better with his yard fear?

StG

There’s also a urine-specific variety of Nature’s Miracle. I’ve used it, and it does seem to be more effective on pee. At very least, it’s no worse - worth a shot.

The trainer pointed out that it hadn’t rained since whatever happened with the people kicking in the lattice, and then this last week it rained every single freaking day (and at that training class, it was raining like crazy and Captain was obviously terrified. He was so terrified he crapped on the floor in the store, to my limitless joy.) So he thinks that might be why it was three weeks later that he started to really freak out. He told me to give him time, and indeed Captain has been venturing out there, maybe going a step or two down, and then coming back. I still have to walk him.

The couch is, what, fifteen years old? But it’s still a good couch and doens’t show its age at all - I really don’t want to get rid of it. I’ll try taking the covers off (might have to wait for the weekend) and I tried some of that zeolite stuff, you never know. It did work great that time I threw up in the car.

Probably best to just change the foam inside the cushions after you clean them. IF and it’s IFFY, you can get the Natures Miracle down to ALL the pee, it may mildew before it dries. Easier, faster and not too pricey to just change the foam.

White vinegar?

Use Anti-Icky-Poo!!!

I’ve repeated this multiple times in different threads. It’s WAY better than Nature’s Miracle. It uses both enzymatic and bacterial action to remove smell. It’s used for crime-scene cleanup.

Just Google “Anti Icky Poo”. Saturate the item, let dry. The really best would be to take the cover off the cushion and take both pieces to a laundromat that has the large capacity washers and wash it in that. Let Dry. Saturate in Anti-Icky-Poo, let dry. The stuff keeps working even once it’s dry.

If you’re taking a trip to the laundromat, may as well do the other couch cushions, too!

You know what your Grandmother would tell you.

My cat peed on my bed when he got really sick about a year ago. After about $60 worth of products to remove the smell I just threw out the mattress and replaced it. There was nothing in the world that was going to get rid of the smell. I hope you have better luck with your couch!

My grandmother would probably tell me to get rid of the dog.
