Unfortunately, the senator in charge is probably from my state (Indiana). I’ve always considered Eli Lilly a major asset to this town and this state, as well as to my career (non-profit work). However, this incident completely changes all of that. While Lilly Endowement money permeates every community foundation in this state, and it’s impossible to get away from it, it will always be dirty to me.
I bet it was Trent Lott…

So he did own up to it on CNN, that kind of takes the wind out my rant… It was the alleged secrecy that really pissed me off.
Putting unrelated riders in bills is shitty, but I guess I’m kind of used to it at this point. And I don’t really know anything about the lawsuits being shielded against, it might be valid torte reform as far as I know.
Someone had to ask the Dickarmey to do it. I heard on the news this morning that the most likely suspect is from the other house - Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee, who actually wrote the rider if I’m not mistaken. Either him or a lobbyist for the Pharmaceutical industry.
At any rate, I think the award from tompaine.com is supposed to go to the person who comes forward with information about whose idea the whole thing was. Yes, Armey inserted the language into the bill, and he’s not even ashamed of it, but somebody had to ask him to do it. He’s owning up to it to deflect blame from the party because his own career is over.
Why on earth do US Politicians have such bizarre names? Trent Lott - Dick Armey - Strom Thurmond. They’re like something out of Lewis Carroll.
And it’s a long history, too - a pretty wacked out one I can remember is Spiro Agnew, and I’m sure there are plenty more.
Actually, perhaps it’s not confined to the US - we have a politician in NZ called Phillida Bunkle, which sounds like a foot disease.
I’ve heard it said that politics is showbiz for the ugly; perhaps it’s also showbiz for those with ugly names (and are too stupid to realize they can change 'em).
I never knew it. I heard about all kinds of sleazy shit done in the Parliament of Whores, but never realized it was even possible to slip an amendment into a bill anonymously! Never would have believed it.

As to the aforementioned Mr. Frist, first time I heard of him was about a week ago, when Buzzflash said Karl Rove was gonna knife Trent Lott and replace him with Doctor Feelbad. Amazing how many times the rabidly left media nail the facts right on the head.
It fits closer with the Republician ideology… but I wouldn’t put it past anyone in the government.

I assume that the Senate Republican leader will still be chosen by a vote of the GOP senators. It would be nice if it came out that Fisk is the Lilly-bitch and public outrage forced the GOP to choose someone else. Not holding my breathe though.
