The Curious Case of Mr. Beith and the Wacked Out Parents

So, is this kidnapping national news or no? I guess it must be local, every story I find online is from a local paper.

William Bieth, a 28 year old principal in Indiana, had “sexual contact” with one of his 11 year old students. She reported it to her parents, who reported it to the police. The parents did not remove her from the school, and immediately after reporting it to the police, LEFT THE GIRL ALONE, in which time she called the principal, who came to get her and took her on a week long ‘trip’, culminating in their capture in Las Vegas.

He admits to having sexual contact with her while they were on their ‘road trip’, and the girl now claims that she’s ‘in love with him’ and that has made claims of abuse against HER PARENTS.

It gets wackier when we realize that they found the girl in Vegas…THREE days ago and her parents just left to go see her…YESTERDAY NIGHT. Why? “Plane tickets are expensive”.

Yes.

It’s also your child, who has been raped and kidnapped and possibly brainwashed by her principal.

And NOW, Las Vegas police have put her in a shelter for abused and neglected kids and won’t let her parents have contact with her until it’s sorted out.

What do you midwest amateur sleuths think of this story? Straightforward kidnapping? Brainwashing? The abuse at home is just a coincidence? And does anyone have a comprehensive story we can link to? I don’t want to have to ‘register’ at the Trib.

Oh, yea, I’ve been following it on CNN and ABC wire services.

hadn’t heard that the police had been told before they split.

It is a weird one all right. All I can say is if that had happened to my daughter ::knock on wood::, I would be in jail for homicide (providing they ever found him of course).

You mess with my family and plane tickets are the last fucking thing on my mind. He would have never gotten the opportunity to drive anywhere except in my trunk.

And tell me this: If your daughter came home from a school camping trip and said “Mr. Bieth touched me inappropriately”, would you

a. Have him arrested immediately
b. TAKE YOUR CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL
c. Call Opal and say hello
d. All of the above.

or

e. Make a police report and then go shopping at wal mart

It also seems that the Beith family have a history of getting caught doing things that do not become the office of school principal.

See the middle one of wring’s three links.

goodness, this is one very weird story. at this point i think the lvpd may be right in placing her in a shelter. heavens, does this girl need help. with the family and school she is with…whoa.

I particularly enjoy the words of the mother, who, upon discovering her child had been found alive said,

“When she comes home, we’re going to have the biggest party!”

YEAH! That’s what she’s in the mood for! An eleven year old girl, kidnapped, raped, possibly abused by her own family! Let’s have a party! Counseling tomorrow, cake tonight!

However, one of her best friends was not allowed to come. You see, you can’t have your cake and Edith, too.

back to topic Yes, it sounds like the best place for this young person is with a foster family til all is sorted out.

It’s possible that this girl was sexually abused by her parents and her principal had sex with her because he knew it. I gather that this sort of thing happens occasionally. Some men look for underage women who they suspect have been abused by their parents. They pretend sympathy with them and tell them that unlike their parents they really understand them. Then they have sex with them themselves. The girls tend to be so confused by their parents’ abuse that they don’t understand that someone could help them without wanting to have sex with them.

Right on, Wendell. That’s what I read, too: that she’d already been molested by her (step?) father. As far as the party, she had a birthday this week. Another news link, not one that wring posted, stated that she was having her party in the foster home where she’s staying, and her family wasn’t allowed to be there.

I dunno.

Sometime in the mid-to-late '80s, I read about a grade-six teacher who married one of his students.

—She was twelve when they met and fourteen when the ceremony took place.

—Her parents gave permission, obviously. Why, I can’t imagine, but they did.

—He must have kept his job, or been able to find another. I assume, anyway: all other things being equal, I don’t suppose any man would want to marry someone who was associated for his being unemployable*.

—The article I read said that one thing that drew them to each other was that they both love Nilla Wafers. Well, great. My friend’s youngest kid, who was 1 when I met the family, eats Oreos the same way I do: no separating or dunking, just one quadrant at a time. Doesn’t mean I’m going to marry him when he turns 14.

—The picture that accompanied the article showed her holding her ears while watching him target-shoot. So he makes unorthodox decisions and has a gun. Wonderful.

*I don’t know how the hell to parse that sentence. What I’m saying is, if he’d ended up banned from teaching, that wouldn’t have been her fault, it would have been his…but she would have been a constant reminder that he was up a creek, job-wise…Sigh. I’m hoping y’all know what I mean.
