I’m pretty sure he thinks that disease is deliberate spread by the medical establishment, and that by stopping vaccinations, exiting WHO and so forth he’ll stop disease by stopping the people inflicting it. Pretty common “alt medicine” nonsense.
I was reading this Atlantic article about how Hitler actually consolidated his power and I found it frighteningly relevant. I don’t know if it is paywalled. I don’t have a subscription and it let me read it.
Me too, for the most part. I’m in Turner’s district and he’s a typical GOP cretin but also one of the few GOP’ers that supported Ukraine (which explains the move).
A huge air force base is in his district and he has done well in supporting it over the years so he as least benefited our district, as opposed to a super-cretin like Gym Jordan.
This whole deportation spectacle will be a mess that defines Drumph’s presidency. I think most Americans want the border tightened up in a major way, but this gestapo tactic of ripping people out of their homes and workplaces is going to backfire majorly. Will be one of many missteps this knucklehead and his lunkhead followers will regret.
The sources I’m seeing are saying ICE is committing 100 officers to this operation, which is a piddling small amount for a metro area of 9 million people. This is gonna be a PR stunt that accomplishes little, and I doubt it’s going to result in any deportations that weren’t already going to happen, but he’ll crow about it as if he just did the yuuugest deportation anyone’s ever seen, and the cult will lap it up.
Reporting I’m seeing is that it will be more like 200 ICE agents. They likely have a list of people who have been arrested for various things that they will be looking for at their jobs or schools.
Also, after all the migrants were bussed north by Abbott and DeSantis the number of people being housed in city operated shelters has ballooned. It is commonplace to see people on street corners and outside grocery stores selling sodas or chocolates and displaying signs asking for help and saying they are from Venezuela or take your pick of countries.
It will be easy pickings for the ICE assholes to swoop in and grab them off the streets. Also, raiding any of the shelters set up by the city would likely be part of the plan.
Yes, it is a large metro area but they will be able to kidnap a large number of people initially. The objective is more about instilling fear and terrorizing these people in the thinking it will stop them coming over the border. It is likely to get very ugly very quickly.
On the contrary, I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what right-leaning Americans want to see. Because it’s not about the border, it’s about race war; they want a wave of terror across the non-white population of the US. And fortifying the border doesn’t do that; for that, you need to target the people who live here.
The most important thing will be lots of pictures, lots of social media coverage, lots of lib outrage and fist-shaking contrasted with MAGA cheering and attaboys for trump’s goons. They don’t have to accomplish anything, they just have too look like they are. A lot of unlucky people who came to the USA hoping to stay and find work will be (virtually) displayed with their heads on pikes.
Exactly this, and well put. The whole “mass deportation” thing was part of Trump’s demagoguery to appeal to the bigotry and ignorance of the MAGA cult, and all that it requires to satisfy them is a spectacle. As always with this crowd, facts don’t matter. Actually doing what he promised was logistically impossible, morally reprehensible, and if attempted would have cost billions and precipitated a wave of violence tantamount to a civil war.
Agreed that the incoming administration is going to find it very difficult in practice to implement mass deportations.
However, those deportations are a longtime obsession of MAGA and one of its main animating forces. There will be a sustained and wide-scale effort to deport people. It’s not going to be a perfunctory photo op.
I agree that it won’t be perfunctory. But it also won’t be on the grand, sweeping, thorough scale that he has promised. That would be impossible.

It was hardly two weeks after the election when a doctor in our clinic received a letter from one of her patients, an undocumented immigrant who feared that Immigration and Customs Enforcement might detain her under a second Trump term.
The patient had diabetes and suffered from rotator cuff tendinitis, which makes reaching backward quite painful. “Is there any possibility you can write a letter,” she asked, “stating that if they handcuff me, can they please handcuff me with my hands in front of me?” She was also panicked about her diabetes. “I am scared that they will not allow me to take any medications in the immigration camps.”
The patient asked that if the doctor needed an in-person visit with her, “may it be scheduled before January?” She would do only virtual visits after Trump took office. “I’m scared I.C.E. will be in train stations and bus stops,” she said.
