The Daily Show 1/5/06

Brokeback Senate! Best Gag evar! Brosnan saying, “Fuck them.” about the Bond producers. Looks like Stewart’s chomping at the bit to get back to ripping folks to shreds.

The whole Byrd/Stevens things was comedy gold. I think I could watch about an hour of “Coot-off!”

Good interview with Brosnan, too – and nice to see him getting some roles that let him stretch a bit. (The Matador is frickin’ hilarious, and he’s totally over-the-top in it. Boozing, sexually ambiguous, hump-everything-that-moves hired killer. Rather like James Bond on a career-ending ether-binge, actually.)

“Why cain’t I quit you, Ted Stevens!”

I didn’t see a thread for DS 1/4/06 so I just want to say, my laugh out loud moment of Wednesday night’s show was the bit about Big Brother as the screen bebhind John had this ginormous eye watching him, and when he turned around suddenly it changed to a cute little kitten!

War!

No!

The “Coot-Off” was hysterical!

[slight hijack]Two pieces of trivia about Jason Jones, the correspondent who did the atlatl segment and has been on the show for a few months:

1- He’s Samantha Bee’s husband (and, by some accounts, the father of her baby)

2- He appeared in one of the Left Behind movies (odd credentials for Daily Show staff)

I hae been in love with him since the wonderfully clever Craft Corner Death Match, where he is a brilliantly snarky and cruel host. It’s on Style network, or it was - I’ve seen it sporadically appear on Sundays, but with no consistency.

Since reading a Jim Kjellgard’s Fire Hunter when I was nine or so, I’ve had a low-level but persistent interest in the atlatl, and as such really enjoyed that piece. The practiced gracefulness of the atlatl enthusiasts was lovely to see, and I’m really glad they included the outtakes of Jason Jones’s honest attempts to use the atlatl under the closing credits. Plus it was an interesting controversy, IMHO.

Great episode. The Coot off had me laughing so hard that I woke my wife up briefly.
