The Daily Show (Trevor says bye for now)

Just caught up on The Daily show last night. Trevor gave a “Bye for now” speech. He claims he’s coming back (I’m not completely confident he will. I hope he does though) but he doesn’t want to come back to the same ol’ same ol’.

I don’t blame him. But I have no clue what a revamped Daily Show would look like or what he wants it to look like. I’m guessing he wants something more casual. Like maybe a couch and chair set up instead of a desk.

Or maybe more on location interviews?

I had just assumed it was an extended summer break and they weren’t sure when the return date would be based on when they felt ok with live audiences. Comedy Central is getting rid of almost, if not all of their non animated shows. Maybe it’s a network fight thing.

Googling, the show returns on September 13. I assume when it does, it will be back in the studio with a live audience. His at-home shows have often lasted more than thirty minutes so perhaps the show in studio will also run long.

Here’s his goodbye. He talks about people (in general) being angry and being happy with being angry. He talks about how polarized everyone has become and how people are seeing things in black and white without any nuances.

He says he’s taking a break after having to deal with lockdown and doing the show socially distanced. He doesn’t know what the new normal will look like.

It’s not like they’re hiring… even if you do have experience.

.

( PM me if I’m wrong, Trevor. )

Maybe someone through another opportunity to Trevor, and he’s just being polite.

Or, I suspect after taking over the (quasi) Jon Stewart paced show, he’s now looking to shape it into something new. Now that he’s been at it while, and with the Covid change up, it would make sense to make change now, I think.

I’ve been a regular Daily Show watcher for years, and when Trevor Noah first took over I liked how he did the show. However, in the last few months I’ve been less than impressed with "The Socially Distant Daily Show. His opening “monologue” seems to be relying more and more on video tricks, like cutting to him with some sort of overlaid effect (I know there’s a name for this, but I’m drawing a blank on what it is). I was actually considering stopping watching it, but I guess now the decision has been made for me. If and when it returns, I may watch to see what changes are made.

He had a chat with Arsenio Hall a week ago or so as a “For Your Emmy Consideration Conversation”. It’s available here. According to Deadline, "Noah also revealed that he has a ‘few surprises’ in store when he and his team finally return to the studio.

‘As for going back to the studio, I have a few surprises as to what that will look like,’ he said. ‘I’m working on a few things with the team, and we’re really excited because I want it to be intentional. People always say, “When are you going back?” I’m never going back, I’m only moving forward.’"

Sounds like he is coming back but with some differences.
