The Damned: Evil Spirits

In case it wasn’t on your radar, The Damned have released another album. Yes, the same (basically?) The Damned that pressed the first UK punk vinyl in 1977 are still in business. They’ve changed quite a lot stylistically over 40 years, never producing more than a couple albums one could readily fit into the same genre before doing something different (Punk, Pop, Goth, Rock with Rockabilly undertones). Evil Spirits is no different in that it is again different.

It’s got an unusual sound to it, sort of like 1980s Moody Blues laced with some of today’s more vexing social themes. Musically I think it’s flawless, and unusual if not unique. What I really like about it, as with everything The Damned have published, is it doesn’t really give a fuck what you think about it.

If you’ve ever stopped to think about the music you’re being fed through the radio and television, and if you’ve ever wondered if there is something out there that is seeing the world YOU see that is not reflected in the usual outlets, I would recommend giving this one a listen. Or three, actually. Because it takes a while to get its hooks in you.
