What’s with all the tired 80’s comparisons? I see it all the time and it’s just plain wrong.
The Darkness are clearly influenced by great 70’s rock bands, such as Queen, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, New York Dolls etc. Not shit like Poison or Motley Crue.
And for the record I can’t stand this band either.
These guys better crank out a second album really fucking quick, because in a year most people will be too embarrassed to ever admit liking them. Ironic mullets are only funny for so long.
Waitaminute - are you all saying that these guys are serious?
When they first got airplay in San Francisco it was clear to the DJ who could barely stop laughing while he was introducing it, and to me after I heard it, that they were joking. Then I saw the video and was convinced they were joking. There’s even a hilarious “German woman rave” version of it they play on the radio out here now.
But here I’m reading that they consider themselves serious musicians and have a legitimate following of fans that consider them that as well?
So I suppose I should stick up for my local band, here…but hey, the Darkness no nothing for me. I’ve no idea what it rips off, but it nonetheless seems derivative.
Just because they’re hilarious and don’t take themselves too seriously doesn’t mean it’s not great music and worth listening to. I agree at first listen their songs might sound like throw-away novelty songs, but the difference is they get better with replays, instead of getting boring. The Darkness are my favourite new find in a very long time, but then I’m a Queen fan, and musically a bit old-fashioned.
Not sure about The Used, but are Saves The Day getting radio play? Huh.
And I just remembered that Thursday seem to be getting recognised a bit, too. Damn. Maybe my original thesis was a little off-target. Hmm… this has happened a bit recently. Perhaps I’m losing my touch.
I still think it’s a little odd to allude to an emo-dominance of the current musical landscape. I’ll concede that it’s not as rare as I suggested, but still…
I’ve gots to jump in here and say I LOVE The Darkness, and to clarify that I love the fact that a novelty/comedy band can be SO musically inclined and so funny and still so damn listenable on repeat playing.
I must ask, do those who hate The Darkness not realise this is a piss-take celebration of all that is great (and cheesy) about 70’s/80’s glam-rock? (Or is that why they hate it so much?). And how do those same folks feel about Tenacious D?
The D (Tenacious, not Darkness) are piss-funny, wonderfully talented and worthy of repeat listening. And, like The Darkness, the music is layered with musical in-jokes (although maybe Tenacious D do this better than The Darkness). Riffs and chords played for humour where once they were played for ‘POWER’.
Certainly they do the piss-take better than Morris Minor and the Majors!
