The Darkness - One Way Ticket to Hell and Back...recently forgotten great music!

I’ve recently been home for a week and a half, and forgot to take back any music with me. So the only music I’ve had in the car (had a lot of driving to do) are the overlaps between my dad and my music tastes.

I played Counting Crows to death last time, but last week I found my dad had a copy of the Darkness’ latest album ‘One way ticket to hell and back’.

It’s confusing title aside, I’d forgotten how great this album was. Every song is unique, and there are some true gems on it. Bald is a fantastic song, and gets better each time you listen to it.

I know the Darkness haven’t dont too well stateside, but I want to know what other dopers think (if anything) of the latest album.

The opinions I’d like to hear are along the lines of “I actually listened to the album, and therefore I’m not just a liar when I say…”, because people on this board (and everywhere else, for that matter) love to jump at the chance to say “ooh…I heard them once in the hairdressers, I couldn’t hear it very well, but I know I hate them and everything they’ve ever done or will ever do.”

It’s be nice to hear some well-formed opinions on one of my newly-rediscovered favourite bands…or what music had you forgotten you loved and found again?

Well, I’ve loved both albums by The Darkness, although I admit I haven’t played the second one multiple times the way I did for their first, Permission To Land. Still, I’m glad they’re out there being swaggering cock-rockers and having fun with rock ‘n’ roll and taking the piss out of all these overly-serious bands. I’m sure Freddie Mercury would have been very proud of them, had he lived to see them – particularly of Justin Hawkins’ soaring falsetto and inappropriately-tight stage costumes.

I was lucky enough to see The Darkness live in 2004, and even though it was a short concert (where they essentially only played their one album out of order), they were amazing live performers, and the sold-out crowd at Orlando’s Hard Rock Live was really into them. I wish there were more rock bands who were just having fun with music, and not all trying to be gloomy or angsty or angry or saving the world.

I like the Darkness - have only heard the title track off this CD but think it is fine. I have seen footage of them live and think they rock live better than the tracks on the CD…

I just am posting to comment on **BBVLou’s ** comment about liking “swaggering cock-rockers and having fun with rock ‘n’ roll and taking the piss out of all these overly-serious bands” - I agree. That’s why I am getting Eagles of Death Metal’s “Death By Sexy” - sounds, from I have I heard, like it is the same kinda vibe. I started a thread about them a day or two ago. Also Supagroup - their song “Ready to Go” has a great AC/DC with Bon Scott hard rock vibe…

We need more of that all around…
