The Dawn of Time: 6,000 years ago!

Seriously, though…There is overwhelming evidence that the Earth is far, far older than 6,000 years. There are cultures and tribes that can trace their own histories back farther than that, just for starters. How do people convince themselves that the Earth is very young? I just can’t wrap my brain around it.

I don’t recollect my preacher telling me anything from the Bible about using my brain. Therefore, you must be one them…:eek: sinners!

For the humor/sarcasm impaired, my reply to *viva is entirely facetious. I haven’t been a practicing Christian for 30 years, and even my church back-when (U.C.C.) wasn’t in that much denial.

There are verses in the prophetic books of the Bible which have a lot of imagery and numbers (involving a banded tree and times passing over it among other things) which in some tortured way, add up to 1975. My mom used that one to prove to me when I was young that 1975 might be the year of Armageddon, but probably not since “no man knows the day or the hour.” Older ex-JW’s may remember when 1975 was supposed to be THE BIG ONE!!! Even older JW’s who are still JW’s may remember that one.

Nowadays, some JW’s explain away 1975 as, “The Bible doesn’t say how many years Adam was alone in the Garden of Eden.”

Great. There’s always an excuse.

IIRC, they eventually started using elaborate mathemagic to find the year 1917, which you’d maybe think would’ve been a failed but kind of impressive prediction about war being waged on some heretofore unseen scale – a “World War,” if you will – as a sign of impending armageddon lo that very year; but, since that obviously didn’t happen, the interpretation is instead that 1917 was the year when someone who’ll live to see that looming apocalypse was prophetically fated to get born.

So they won’t need to revise that one until the last person born in 1917 dies.

You know, one thing about the Bible that is never brought up is that in Genesis, it says God made the animals before he made Adam. And those animals were being fruitful and multiplying, so there were female animals. So why did God make Adam, and then have to make a separate decision to make a female human? “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Oh gee, really? You saw fit to give mates to every animal on the planet, but you had to think good and hard about giving your creation in your own image a mate? Why?"

To explain why women should be second class, of course. As Archie Bunker said, “He made Eve from a rib, a cheaper cut.”

There’s the related myth of Lilith, one version of which has her created at the same time as Adam. But she didn’t act properly submissive to Adam and insisted on having sex on top*, so she was banished and replaced by Eve, who was specifically created to be subordinate to Adam.
*IIRC it was televangelist Pat Robertson who brought that up a few years ago, to condemn that sexual position as sinful.
