The Day After Tomorrow (spoilers?)

I thought the surge was really well done. (I don’t have Cartooniverse’s knowledge of the layout of NYC, so I’ll defer on whether it came from the right direction.) I did wonder whether the water level should have dropped at some time after the surge. If they had had it dropping after the surface froze, there could have been lots o’ wacky adventures on unsupported ice sheets…

About half an hour after we left the theatre, my friend Mike said, “What temperature does helicopter fuel freeze at? If it was -160 in the eye of the storm, shouldn’t the carbon dioxide in the air freeze?” ISTR that at altitude in Antarctica, it’s close to the freezing point of CO[sub]2[/sub]. (WebElements gives a boiling point of -78C for CO[sub]2[/sub].

Maybe the fuel was just coagulating?

My theory was, the hypercold in the eye of the storm didn’t last more than a few minutes at ground level, only enough to frost over the buildings. Hey! Maybe that Creeping Frost o’ Death was CO[sub]2[/sub] frost…

Funny, we didn’t notice that. But then, I live in Canada. Bundling up to go outside in blizzard-like conditions is sort of normal. I will, however, keep an eye out next winter for the Creeping Frost o’ Death.
