The Day of the Squid

Wow that photograph is so incredible.

Researchers capture Giant Squid

I watched the video as well. But why couldn’t they just have photographed/filmed the creature without killing it?

They probably wanted it to live, as they would have been able to gather more useful information from a live specimin.

They also do research on Whales.

Caputuring a (presumably) uncooperative giant squid, and keeping it alive on a boat sounds like quite the task. I’d be impressed…

From the CNN article:

“It took two people to pull it in, and they lost it once, which might have caused the injuries that killed it,” he said.

I presume that means they killed it during the capture, before they attempted to bring it aboard.

Wow. That video will give me nightmare-fodder for weeks.

In doing some cursory Googling, I found this curious page dedicated to all things, uh, squiddy: Squid. (What’s the adjectival form of “squid”?)

And don’t miss the heartwarming seasonal carol The 13 Days of Cephalopodmas, via cephalopodmas.org.

Cephalopodmas? Man, there is a Web site for everything.

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t really find it all that impressive. The squid does not really seem all that big in the video or the pictures.

From the article:

So that may be why it wasn’t so impressive. The older ones are probably the jaw-droppers.

From the CNN link:

“The squid, which measured about 24-feet long, died while it was being caught.”

I’ve lived in efficency apartments shorter than that and trailers it could wrap itself around a’la 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, dish sized eyes peering at me through a window typing on the 'Dope.

Note to self: Do not write bad things about squid. :looks around fearfully:
