What, no one else is enthusing over the first-ever live footage of the giant squidshown on the discovery Channel last night?
That is cool. I have seen one of the preserved bodies at the Mote Aquarium.
Fascinating!
It’s very cool. There was a little bit of discussion in this thread, but it didn’t get a ton of replies.
Eh. Giant squid footage is for suckers.
When do they start sinking ships and attacking submarines?
It was pretty cool, if you don’t mind 2 hours of breathless narration to get the 22 seconds of squid.
Welcome to info/science/documentary TV in the 21st century.
Jerk.
Yes, I was thinking of mentioning that in the OP… one hour would have been more than enough.
Thanks, that was awesome!
Of all the places they could have found a giant tentacle monster, it had to be off the coast of Japan.
That was so cool! I also love the enthusiasm of the researcher. It’s too bad the video is so short. Hopefully they get more footage after this.
Seriously you guys, we share the same planet with that thing. It’s so… wait for it… TENTACULAR!
I think that I remember that the squid that they filmed was only ten feet long. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.) I’m hoping that they eventually get around to filming much bigger ones!
Wasn’t there another GS video a few years ago? It was mostly just tentacles poking at a camera on a long cord, IIRC.
I watched the entire special (because I am in, fact, a sucker) and I think they said there had been camera footage before, but this was the first time a real live person witnessed a giant squid in the wild. They caught footage by camera, and then later the Japanese researcher (Dr. Goo?) went down by submersible and actually saw it himself. I think this one was an estimated 16ft long but was missing its two feeding tentacles, so it was probably much longer at some point. My inner voice kept whispering, “Not that giant” though.
Honestly my favorite part was watching the New Zealand researcher trying to hide his frustration that the Japanese guy saw the squid and not him.
I don’t get this…is this supposed to be funny? Like my joke about suckers?
I think Mr. Boozahol Squid took your anti-squid comment personally : )
When he feels wounded, the only defense means at his disposal are writing about it or getting a tattoo and he used the former.
He was just venting.
Nothing quite like being well armed for a squid joke.
