The definitive Custard Creme?

Custard Cremes - what’s your brand?

It has been brought to my attention that I have never tried a “Custard Creme.” This is reportedly an outrage, and my “Irish” card has been pulled until the deficit has been repaired. LOL! So, naturally, I went straight to Amazon to order some.

The available choices are McVities/Crawford’s, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose, Tesco, and Khong Guan.

Which should I get? Or is there a definitive Custard Creme which is not on the list?

Thanks

McVities/Crawfords. Apart from Khong Guan which I have never heard of, but seems to be a Singapore company, the others are all supermarket own-brands. McVities are an actual biscuit manufacturer.

There are nuances, but Custard Creams are pretty similar across a wide range of brands. Bourbon biscuits have a greater spectrum of variability than custard creams.

My key criterion is actually that the bas-relief carving of the design must be crisp and the words ‘custard cream’ must be present and clearly readable.

McVities it is. Thanks!

Do you dunk? You ought to have a nice cup of tea (coffee if you must) and dunk your custard cream halfway into it for a few seconds, before eating.

When I was a child my mum managed to hoodwink us into believing that Custard Cremes and Bourbons were luxury biscuits, because of the filling. Only when I was of an age to have to buy my own did I find out they are amongst the cheapest there are.

OK, but what exactly is ‘rich’ about Rich Tea biscuits?
