The definitive list of Dopers who have changed their usernames

I used to be tpayne.

Everyone can relax, now that the cat’s out of the bag.

I used to be AndrewT

Admittedly, I am forgettable, but even I kept forgetting my name when I was Tiramisu. As much as I love the dessert, the name didn’t fit me.

I used to be lavenderlemon. I still like how that looks on the board but I like blue better than lemon.

Actually, they did. I used to go by William V.

All dates, membership # (33) and post count correct. Only a name change.

When I was a guest, my username was eustachian=/fallopian, except with the proper DNE symbol. VBulletin stopped recognizing it before I tried to become a permanent member, so I switched to my current username (after the type cast and the book by Richard Russo, not out of some celebration of being heterosexual!)

I was known as tazz999.

As is so often the case with these folks, I completely forgot What Exit?'s old username. Which, of course, was probably the idea. I’m touched that I was the second one on the list, though. (Shhhh, I know it’s because I’m the second-most-recent. This is my moment, here. Don’t ruin it.)

It didn’t? So all of these posts are from when it went to subscription on?

Ye gods! I spend way too much time here!

As I explained in a couple of threads around the time I changed mine, including my own thread, I had a couple of reasons specific to me.

fetus was from an inside joke I stole from an old high school teammate, and I wanted to

  1. wash my hands of the theft and
  2. outgrow the name, which seemed juvenile, especially considering its origin

not to mention that

  1. people kept capitalizing it, which I thought looked awful, and
  2. a number of people got pissed off when I told them how to type my username, and
  3. I couldn’t really blame them.

and

  1. it was completely impossible to vanity-search.

It was a pretty big decision for me (for a name change on an Internet message board, anyway), and I’m happy with how it turned out. For a while it was weird to see people talking to some guy with a two-word capitalized name and go, “Oh, wait, that’s me!” To be honest, I still sort of think of myself as fetus here, and when I quote myself it takes some effort not to type “fetus” (I do it by hand). You know how when you first learn a new language, you mentally translate everything you read or hear in that language into English words? I still kind of “translate” Hostile Dialect into fetus when I see it, and I have to remind myself sometimes that Hostile Dialect is my real username, it’s how people will remember me here forevermore, not some BabelFish error. I like the new outfit, though.

I’ve noticed that a lot of name changes seemed to be done for similar reasons–to outgrow the arbitrary-phrase-with-numbers-on-the-end AOL thing or the generic-manly-seeming-Interweb-name-that-really-makes-people-think-you’re-12 thing. A maturation process, if you will. (Although I really miss the name whuckfistle.)

I played rugby for the Pygmies in college, but now I play for the Santos.

Pygmy Rugger / Santo Rugger

I used to be SuperLorie. When I changed my username, TubaDiva (I think that’s who I had to email) said she hated smurfs because they were communists or something. I think she was kidding. Maybe it was Lynn Bodoni. I can’t remember. But I remember the smurf rant.

I used to be Smug, I am now meek.
.

Correct.

I changed mine, because a) the lowercase drove me nuts, and b) everyone seemed to think the name had sexual connotations.

That is interesting. I would like to hear the story behind that change.

(Nzinga, Seated; formally Venus Hottentot)

I wonder if you are the only member that was strong-armed in to a username change?

I originally started posting under jeffrice, but it was too much like my real name, so I changed it.

So, there’s a female Doper with the name Freudian Slit? Huh. Is it just me or is that kind of dirty-hot?

I used to be Dolores Claiborne.

Wasn’t whuckfistle, too?

There was a seal_clubber whose signature proclaimed that tubadiva’s disapproval inspired a change to seal_cleaner.

A couple of other additions to the list:

davenportavenger (who’s now a Guest) stopped being continuity eror.
