I know there are many here who have given up on the NYT being fair to the D’s but it does look as if there is major trouble brewing at the DNC. They are in debt while the GOP is flush with cash and the party chair is increasingly isolated, according to reporting.
If ever there were a time when the Democrats should be anticipating an enormous Blue wave this would seem to be the time. I sincerely hope this article is overblown or they manage to get their shit together. Where are the big donors like Soros, Buffet, etc? The potential for disaster looms.
The DNC is a largely meaningless and pointless organization. When there’s a Democratic president, the DNC is just an arm of the President’s political organization. When there’s not, they’re, at best, a scheduling and administrative organization that takes their (minimal) political and policy cues from the results of Democratic primaries and general elections.
The only potential for disaster would be something signaling Democratic voters, and independent voters angry at Trump, the war, and other GOP catastrophes, are unlikely to turn out and vote in the midterms. There’s no data that suggests this right now.
In short, this is just more/typical NYT/mainstream-media “the sky is falling!” drama-making about Democrats and the left in general.
Seriously… who cares about the DNC? The voters certainly don’t.
Maybe the voters don’t but certainly D candidates who rely on the party for fundraising do. This could well be more of the NYT anti-Democrat hysteria we saw during the Biden years but what if it isn’t? Hopefully the DSCC and DCCC are doing better raising money than the DNC.
What if what if what if… sure, maybe Democrats are going down in flames and it’s fascism forever. I see nothing in the article to suggest this is the case. The party is pretty much always a disorganized mess. Fundraising is driven by candidates and their individual campaign organizations, and maybe to a lesser degree the CCs.
Fuck the NYT and the mainstream media in general. Functionally speaking, they are allies of Trump and the GOP, and this article is just another example.
Regardless of any bias by the NYT the fact remains the DNC has nearly $16 million in debt while the RNC has $90 million on hand. Here is a link to Ballopedia. I see that as a serious problem.
The good news appears to be that the respective Democratic Senatorial and Congressional committees have a small advantage (about $3m) over the equivalent committees on the GOP side.
Individual Democratic candidates may be doing well enough with fundraising at this point but the outsize financial advantage enjoyed by the RNC just 100 days out from the midterms is something that could have an impact on some of the closer races, particularly in the Senate.
The long-time point of the DNC is to support incumbents. That works well to keep the party in power, but poorly when the party is out of power and needs new blood. Incumbents are generally more centrist; the race to be the craziest found in Republican ranks is not a party trait for the Democrats. Historically a good thing until Trump broke all norms.
Since I get about a million solicitations from candidates every day, I’m seeing a rise in fundraising by activist groups that work to pool money, but also allow funds to be targeted to specific races, and appeals from individual candidates nationwide rather than local. Democrats have won the small-money race in recent elections. Republicans always win the big donor prizes. That alone says something about the parties.
The midterms look to be an ahistoric heavily skewed collection of local issue and local candidate races. The Democratic leadership, whoever the hell they are, has been totally derelict in creating any statement of policy that candidates can coalesce around. If the Democrats win control of both houses of Congress they’ll find themselves in a battle to create a party policy. If they provide one 2028 looks good. If they continue on in total disarray - that’s an accurate phrase - 2028 looks iffy.*
