The dog pees on us

This is really weird. It has happened several times now.

The dog (Jack Russell Terrier) will be lying on someone, mainly my husband, her favorite person in the world, the man she adores, and after awhile he will realize he is wet because she peed on him. Last night she did it on our daughter.

It’s hard to connect the event to scolding her because you don’t notice it until you feel cold. At first it’s warm so you don’t feel it.

I don’t mean that she stands up, squats and pees. She is lying down and then there is wetness.

I don’t know if she can’t control it. I think she is lazy. Because if she couldn’t contorl it, wouldn’t it be happening all the time?

Is this a control issue or an “I’m mad at you” issue? We are going to babysit a little boy (age 19 months) soon and he has been over a few times lately to get to know us and our house. She did it after he left last night. But she also did it today to my husband.

Any ideas? Sorry this is gross…

I would say it’s probably not a behavior problem, because most dogs will not soil where they are laying. I would talk to your vet, because it sounds like this may be a physical problem.

Is she fixed? Sometimes females lose bladder control when they’ve been spayed. It’s a hormonal issue and can easily be fixed with medication.

I would definitely take her to a vet. I would be especially concerned about her kidneys.

Bladder incontinence isn’t that uncommon, especially in bitches spayed before their first heat. A short course of estrogen often takes care of it; if it’s chronic there’s several very safe options, like Prion (a med.)
The vet will want a urine sample to check for a UTI, and it’s way easier if you take one in with you…otherwise they might have to catheretize her. You’ll have to follow her around on her morning pee routine with a little dish. If you get grossed out easily, wear latex gloves.

She’s not mad at you, and incontience is common. Don’t scold her, she can’t help it!
