The Doorses went to Pittsburgh for Christmas, and all we got was... (Warning: Gross)

A really miserable case of viral gastroenteritis. It started early Saturday morning, when Aaron threw up four times, going through every sleeper we brought for him. Attributing it to a long car trip and the excitement of seeing so many people, we thought nothing of it.

That night, Aaron didn’t want to eat much, and again, we simply thought that he was so excited to see everyone that he didn’t want to eat. (Which, for Aaron, is par for the course. He thinks there are occasionally more fun things to do than eat and sleep.) And it was pretty warm in the house, what with all the people there.

Sunday morning, we all got up at six a.m. because Aaron was crying. He took most of a bottle, but had had a rather, ahh, explosive poop. To make it worse, Airman and I were both feeling rather lousy. Soccerbaby took care of the baby so we could go back to sleep, which we did.

Later, I got up and got rid of the nice dinner that Aunt Peg had made the night before. Twice. I thought, as I communicated via porcelain telephone, that my great-grandmother was right. Pork will rot your guts. Airman was not so lucky. He had to lose his dinner three times. And, at that point, Aaron wasn’t taking anything at all and had a nasty case of diarrhea.

So, Airman went home at lunchtime, and got sick several times on the way home. I stayed in Pittsburgh and just felt worse as the day progressed. My muscles ached, and the thought, smell and sight of food sent me to the bathroom. Aaron was still not taking any fluids.

So, what’s a girl to do? She calls her mommy. Mommy told me to get the baby some Pedialyte. Uncle Paul ran for the Pedialtye, which did not interest Aaron in the least. And since babies can dehydrate very quickly, we spent the evening at the emergency room.

Thank God Aaron was mostly okay. He was somewhat dehydrated, and we were able to intervene before it got serious. Basically, he was in the tail-end of this infection (no pun intended), and just has to ride it out. He’s taking about eight ounces of Pedialyte every four hours or so, which is adequate hydration. He’s still not 100%, but he’ll be okay.

As for me, I’m eating chicken soup with rice for dinner, and I feel better already. Airman went to work today, but has been somewhat under the weather.

What sucks is we spread this bug to Airman’s grandmother, and sister. Airman’s grandmother is 85, and Airman’s sister was going home today. Traveling is miserable when you’re sick.

It must be said.

That’s what you get for going to Shitsburg.

Sorry, guys. I hope you feel better soon.

Our first Christmas with our son was so effin’ miserable I can hardly bear to recall it. We all had the respiratory flu. It was AWFUL.

Just to tell you the kid has ended quite healthy overall, and the next three Christmases have been very nice. I hope you used up all your bad holiday luck this time around.

Last night was sheer hell. Poor kid’s been as cranky as I’ve ever seen him, and considering we’re talking about the most laid-back, mellow child, that’s saying a lot.

Finally figured the kid was hungry. He took half a bottle or so of formula, and that kept him happy till about 4 am or so.

Thank God.

Aww, what a sucky holiday! Hope you all are feeling better!

Pedialyte is noxious. I wouldn’t drink it either! I don’t know why all pediatric electrolyte replacement drinks taste so disgusting.

I go for water or formula. Neither is my boys has ever gotten so dehydrated that they stop wetting diapers, which is the primary alert for my pediatrician.

What Gingy said;)

And hugs to y’all. Especially Aaron:)

Aaron was still throwing up this morning, so he got another trip to the ER at the suggestion of the nice Tricare nurse. Babies dehydrate at the drop of a hat, and since he wasn’t keeping much down, it was a real risk.

So the nice ER people took blood, attached a bag to catch his urine, and took some X-rays. None of this made Aaron happy. He was as pissed off as I’ve ever seen him. We got some more Pedialyte in him, and he’s doing much better. He’s kept down everything we’ve given him and he’s had some nice wet diapers today. Tomorrow, he goes back to formula, watered down with more Pedialyte. Fortunately, the stuff was on sale at the local supermarket, thanks to the nice people at Ross Pharmaceuticals, which makes the stuff.

As for me and Airman, we’re both feeling better. I took a nap this afternoon when Aaron finally fell asleep, and I feel a lot better. Airman’s back to his usual (obnoxious) self.

If it helps any, I’d like to apologize on behalf of Pittsburgh. :frowning: Sorry you all had to go through that.

Aww, poor little bugger! I can totally sympathize. Paul and I went on a cruise on the MS Amsterdam over Christmas. We got home on Sunday (my birthday!), all virus riddled, and have been fighting over our single bathroom since then. Much luck and hope for a happy new year to you and the little guy!!
