A really miserable case of viral gastroenteritis. It started early Saturday morning, when Aaron threw up four times, going through every sleeper we brought for him. Attributing it to a long car trip and the excitement of seeing so many people, we thought nothing of it.
That night, Aaron didn’t want to eat much, and again, we simply thought that he was so excited to see everyone that he didn’t want to eat. (Which, for Aaron, is par for the course. He thinks there are occasionally more fun things to do than eat and sleep.) And it was pretty warm in the house, what with all the people there.
Sunday morning, we all got up at six a.m. because Aaron was crying. He took most of a bottle, but had had a rather, ahh, explosive poop. To make it worse, Airman and I were both feeling rather lousy. Soccerbaby took care of the baby so we could go back to sleep, which we did.
Later, I got up and got rid of the nice dinner that Aunt Peg had made the night before. Twice. I thought, as I communicated via porcelain telephone, that my great-grandmother was right. Pork will rot your guts. Airman was not so lucky. He had to lose his dinner three times. And, at that point, Aaron wasn’t taking anything at all and had a nasty case of diarrhea.
So, Airman went home at lunchtime, and got sick several times on the way home. I stayed in Pittsburgh and just felt worse as the day progressed. My muscles ached, and the thought, smell and sight of food sent me to the bathroom. Aaron was still not taking any fluids.
So, what’s a girl to do? She calls her mommy. Mommy told me to get the baby some Pedialyte. Uncle Paul ran for the Pedialtye, which did not interest Aaron in the least. And since babies can dehydrate very quickly, we spent the evening at the emergency room.
Thank God Aaron was mostly okay. He was somewhat dehydrated, and we were able to intervene before it got serious. Basically, he was in the tail-end of this infection (no pun intended), and just has to ride it out. He’s taking about eight ounces of Pedialyte every four hours or so, which is adequate hydration. He’s still not 100%, but he’ll be okay.
As for me, I’m eating chicken soup with rice for dinner, and I feel better already. Airman went to work today, but has been somewhat under the weather.
What sucks is we spread this bug to Airman’s grandmother, and sister. Airman’s grandmother is 85, and Airman’s sister was going home today. Traveling is miserable when you’re sick.
