I have the worst upset stomach of my life. How much vomit and diarrhea can one person have in them???
I am so tired but I can’t go to bed because every 10 minutes, with little warning, I have to make a dash to the bathroom, fling myself on the toilet and hold the garbage can up to my mouth. It’s pretty much just dry heaves at this point though.
I don’t know if I ate something off or I have the flu or what but I feel like bloody hell.
Should I? I am trying to decide if I need to go to the hospital. I don’t want to go, waste my time and the doctors time and the money for a cab for nothing.
With those symptoms it’s probably something you ate.
Having had “stomach flu” severe enough to land me in the hospital I’m all too familiar with what severe dehydration feels like but I’m not sure how to best describe it. Hopefully a real doc or nurse will drop into this thread and give some valid pointers on knowing when to go to the doc or the ER.
Four hours of the misery is probably not “go to the doctor” territory. If you feel lightheaded/faint or even pass out it is, but most people can do the vomit/diarrhea dance for half a day or more. Wait for at least two hours without upchucking before attempting to eat or drink, although you might want to rinse your mouth out. Start with sips of water or sucking on ice chips.
My sympathies. It is an awful thing to go through.
At least call in to your doctor and ask them. There might be some kind of virus going around and you need antibiotics to treat it. At the least, get a friend or your SO to pick you up some electrolyte replacement. Pedialyte can be used by adults, and I have been told that it stays down easier. Only sip it a little.
I haven’t vomited in about 20 minutes. I’m so tired, I just want to go to bed but I can’t because I’m afraid I’ll have diarrhea and not make it to the toilet.
Oof, I’d feared it’d been a day or two. Still, you need to start rehydrating now. I can’t say when you should go in for both puking and diarrhea. For diarrhea by itself they say go in if it has been over two days. See here. The puking ups the dehydration rate though, so that’s why I think you should at least check in with a doctor.
You got a recliner chair close to the pot you can camp out in and drowse a little? Make sure to make a clear path to the pot though. Move that table etc.
As Broomstick said, wait a bit before you drink anything. I wouldn’t eat anything solid/normal for a day or two. Start with one sip, and if you keep that down after (guessing) ten-fifteen minutes take another. As time passes and you haven’t puked you can sip more. I’d stick with clear liquids for a good day, then after that bland “sick food” until you are sure you’ve worked this out of your system.
Edit: Have you checked your temperature? Might do that?
I do have a recliner but it’s farther away than the chair I’m sitting in. But I’m so uncomfortable and I just need to lay down so I think I’ll use a bunch of pads and make myself a diaper :o .
If I can’t get comfortable or I have to just keep jumping out of bed, I’ll come back.
I’m so cold too, I just want to get warm and go to sleep.
Put some towels under you, and maybe a trash bag under them? (Edit: So only the towels get soiled, not the bed or mattress.) Might be easier clean up? Especially if you have a trash bag handy to put the soiled towels in? Reading your “cold” comment, that may mean you are spiking a fever. Please check your temperature?
I had that (this) a couple years ago. It scares me to think of getting it again.
Do really try to get yourself some Gatorade or Pedialyte. I didn’t feel better until I got some of that in me - the very night of “the event”. I think I subsided on Gatorade and Saltines for about 3 days straight until I was brave enough to eat something else.
I’m sick as a dog now too but for me, the bright side is always ‘At least it’s not the stomach flu’. So…you have my sympathies. I had the same thing a few years ago and ended up ‘sleeping’ with a bucket next to the bed. It was a completely miserable 2 days. Lots of good advice here for you though. Hope it clears up for you sooner than later.
Well I made it through a very long night. I had to make a few dashes to the washroom and one time didn’t make it to the garbage can in time so I just hurled into the tub.
The throwing up has stopped and I was finally able to keep some water down but I do still have the diarrhea. My temperature last night was 100.3 and now it’s down to 95.5.
In the middle of it all I was worried that my stomach had perforated or something because it was just a burning pain.
Hope you’re feeling a little better! Last year i had a similar thing and was miserable for 3 days. What helped though was gatorade and just those over the counter motion sickness tablets, I could actually keep stuff down with those. I will always keep those motion sickness tablets on hand now after that bout of sickness.
