The Dope Boards get namechecked on NPR

Heard it this morning on the way to work.

It’s about the sample in Kung Fu Fighting and other incidents of pop culture, and how it has become shorthand for “something Asian is about to happen”, and references this thread.
Pretty cool.

Very cool - I heard it this morning in the kitchen, but didn’t grasp the SDMB reference. That link to the article on NPR’s website shows that they base almost all of their discussion on the SDMB thread. Wow!

If NPR was going to namecheck the SDMB, I would have thought it would be for the thread about the interesting names of various NPR correspondents.

So do we have a Doper with the username Kat Chow, or some variant, here? Or was she just a lurker?

I feel cheated. The text version of the feature pretty clearly discusses the SDMB thread. But I just listened to it on the NPR Media Player; they skipped right past any reference to the SDMB, and went straight to the Swedish web designer and his obsession beginning in 2006.

Is there another audio version that does name-check us?

Speaking of the Swedish web designer, if Code Switch ever wants to do a feature on Scandinavian stereotypes, they could probably use him and Swedish Chef to represent Sweden.

MODERATOR SPEAKETH: Since this is about a SDMB thread receiving prominence elsewhere, I’m thinking it’s more ATMB than MPSIMS, and am moving it thence.

yanceylebeef: very cool of you to catch it, thanks for calling it to our attention!

I heard this on the radio this morning, not hearing any reference to the SDMB. I immediately remembered that thread and thought, “I have to remember to resurrect that thread today to link to this NPR story. We already did a bunch of their research.” I guess that was even more true than I thought!
